Dr. Michael Langan, an internal medicine physician at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, cautions anyone with a blog can dispense information and advice; and a good way to avoid misinformation is to ask your doctor to recommend the sites they trust. Additionally, the National Institute on Aging recommends using health websites sponsored by Federal Government agencies. They say a good place for reliable, up-to-date information is the National Institutes of Health, but at the same time, remind everyone that the Internet is no substitute for seeing your doctor or other health professional who can give you advice that caters to your specific situation. 

Other things to look for include name recognition such as the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. Moreover, remember sites that end in .gov, identity U.S. government agencies; .edu, educational institutions; and .org, usually designates nonprofit organizations (such as professional groups; scientific, medical, or research societies; and advocacy groups). A .com is a commercial site.

The NIH says to look for the date of the information (often can be found at the bottom of the page) and see if the authors and contributors are identified. If the author is listed, what is his/her background and what is their goal in writing the article or the intent of the organization it is written for. Researchers have found evidence suggesting genetics, environment, and lifestyle can affect our risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. A poor diet is one of those lifestyle choices that causes high blood pressure and heart disease, and also increases a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease. 

WebMD.com reports the MIND diet; a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets has shown promise in reducing the risk or slowing cognitive decline. They cite early studies showing MIND lowered the “risk of Alzheimer's by 53% in those who follow it closely and by 35% in those who follow more loosely.” In 2018, the MIND diet recommendation was expanded to include older adults who have suffered a stroke. 

To adhere to the diet, weekly meals should include food from the following groups: green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil, and wine. They say a good way to start is with a daily salad, one other vegetable, and three servings of whole grains every day. In terms of vegetables, collard greens, kale, and spinach have been found to be especially healthy. 

Poultry should be eaten once a week, fish twice a week and beans every other day. Nuts and berries make good snacks, blueberries and strawberries being some of the best. Olive oil not only adds a great taste to foods but has been shown to improve brain function over the long term and protect against dementia.

They explain there are some noticeable characteristics separating normal memory loss from dementia.  

For instance, many older adults occasionally forget how to operate a piece of machinery or how to program a remote control if they have not done it in a while; but doctors say this is common and most-likely not a cause for concern. However, it is more concerning when a person forgets how to get home or how to perform routine tasks. 

It is normal to have to pause and think how to communicate a thought or idea but it is not normal to forget what you just said and continuously repeat yourself, or to not be able to finish a thought. Another sign the problem is more serious than normal forgetfulness is using the wrong word to describe something or forgetting the name altogether; as is forgetting names of family and friends. 

Another example of more than normal age-related forgetfulness is forgetting what an object is or what it is for. With normal memory loss, you may forget where you put your glasses; someone with Alzheimer’s may find their glasses and not recognize them as their own or forget they wear glasses. Experts caution even in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, people can have balance problems, and as the disease progresses, balance typically gets worse. A study found people with dementia were “8-times more likely to fall than older people who have not been diagnosed with a form of dementia.”

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Adjust Your Attitude toward “Growing Older”

New studies suggest our attitude toward growing older may affect how well we do with our own aging process. Researchers report findings that show those who negatively view aging may have a higher likelihood of developing changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. One such study was published in the American Psychological Association’s journal, Psychology and Aging. Its authors suggest if a person shifts their belief about aging to a more positive view; it may be beneficial in helping to mitigate the ravages of Alzheimer’s. 

Associate professor of public health and psychology at the Yale School of Public Health and the study’s leader, Becca Levy said, “We believe it is the stress generated by the negative beliefs about aging that individuals sometimes internalize from society that can result in pathological brain changes.” She says while these findings are concerning, “it is encouraging to realize that these negative beliefs about aging can be mitigated, and positive beliefs about aging can be reinforced, so that the adverse impact is not inevitable.”

The research was part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging; a long-term study based out of Baltimore. All participants had been part of the study for decades and were healthy adults free of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The survey questions focused on individuals' beliefs regarding aging. Negative views included the belief elderly people are sickly, absent-minded, have little to contribute, and are unable to concentrate well. Positive beliefs included thinking older people can lead vibrant lives and be actively engaged in society.  

Participants were also given regular MRI brain scans to check for signs of Alzheimer’s.  Those who answered questions about aging negatively were discovered to have a “greater decline in the volume of the hippocampus, a part of the brain critical for memory.” Researchers explain this is important as “the hippocampus is one of the first areas of the brain to shrink in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.”  Brain autopsies were conducted on 74 patients who died during the study. Those who were more negative about aging had more plaques and tangles in their brain, which is associated with Alzheimer’s; than their more positive counterparts. 

Becca Levy and other researchers hypothesize that Americans hold a more negative view on aging as compared to countries such as India; it could contribute to Alzheimer’s being five times more prevalent in our country. However, while positive thinking is no guarantee for good brain health, it certainly helps us feel better.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next. 

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it. 

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.  

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

At the top of our team in the position of Executive Director is Kevin Taliaferro. Tips to Improve Concentration

As we grow older, not only do our physical abilities slow down but so do our cognitive abilities. We may find ourselves not able to remember facts the same way we used to or have difficulty thinking about two problems at the same time. Professionals say these changes make it harder for us to stay focused and easier to get distracted. You may not recall new information as you did in the past because you didn’t really learn it. 

Changes can start as early as in our 50s and 60s but experts say to remember that most age-related memory loss and thinking problems are normal and not necessarily a sign of Alzheimer’s. They explain it can “simply reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” Despite your brain moving a little slower, your judgement is still intact and you have the ability to make sense of what you know and form reasonable arguments. Another thing to consider is even the smallest hearing loss can make processing new information more difficult. 

Research shows while our ability to concentrate diminishes, there are things we can do to improve it.  A 2015 study found participants who played brain games 15 minutes, 5 days a week had a big impact on improving their concentration. Another small study in 2018 saw an improvement in seniors’ visual selective attention (VSA), the ability to concentrate on a specific task while ignoring distractions, after playing video games. Recommended cognitive activities include things like crosswords puzzles, Sudoku, chess, jigsaw puzzles and other memory games.

Your Kitchen May be a Breeding Ground for Bacteria & Mold

Experts say while you pride yourself on keeping a clean kitchen, you may still have some appliances or tools that are a hidden risk to your family’s health. Along with throwing away dirty sponges, which are a source of germs, viruses and bacteria; other kitchen tools are not meant to last forever. To keep your family healthy, they may need to be replaced. 

One of those items many kitchens have is a blender that is often used to make healthy smoothies, drinks and soups. Alyssa Resnick, a registered dietitian based in Hoboken, New Jersey warns that due to the construction of a blender, old food content and mold can build up in the base and leach out into the contents of the blender. She suggests every time it is used to completely disassemble each part of the blender and thoroughly clean it. 

Cutting boards are another common source of germs, viruses and bacteria and should be replaced every so often. Experts say if a wooden board is cracked it should be thrown away. To keep them in good shape, avoid putting them in the dishwasher but rather scrub them with a brush in a hot detergent solution. Once dry, apply a food grade sealer. Plastic cutting boards should also be routinely checked for signs of wear and discarded when they have deep grooves and scratches. 

Dieticians warn that damp dish towels are another breeding ground for bacteria and are used to dry surfaces, dishes and hands. To stay safe, launder your towels often and keep paper towels on hand for messy and dirty cleanups. Other dangers in the kitchen include non-stick pans that are scratched or damaged. Maggie Michalczyk, a registered dietitian based in Chicago explains that many pans are coated with a chemical known as perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. According to the American Cancer Society, "PFOA has the potential to be a health concern because it can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time."
