Study Shows the Benefits of Daily Exercise

Even if you have already moved into the “senior” category of life, medical experts say it is not too late to improve your health and mobility, and one of the best ways to do it is to walk. This was the findings based on the Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) trial, which included more than 1,600 men and women between the ages of 70 and 89. Participants consisted of people who were not regularly exercising and fairly frail.  

The participants were divided in half with one group assigned to daily walking and strength and balance exercises. The other group attended educational workshops and were introduced to gentle stretching routines. “After 2½ years, the volunteers in the exercise group were 28% less likely to have become disabled (defined by the inability to walk about 400 yards without help) compared to those in the education group. They were also 18% less likely to have had any episode of physical disability.” LIFE’s researchers say the results could have been more dramatic but for the fact that those in the workshop group learned about the benefits of walking and some started to walk and exercise on their own.  

The advantages of walking include stopping bone mass loss, strengthening leg and abdominal muscles, and improving circulation by helping to lower blood pressure and reducing the risk for heart disease. It helps people lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, sleep better, increase mental sharpness, and improve balance and stability. Doctors say walking can increase your lifespan but if you have not exercised in a while, they caution to slowly increase your pace as well as the distance you walk. While most of us love to snack, nutritionists say making poor choices can impact our overall diet and negate the effort we make with healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Lauri Wright, chair of the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of North Florida, explains snacks should not only satisfy hunger but add to our nutritional intake. Moreover keep in mind data suggests up to a quarter of our daily calories come from snacking. 

Add to that while our metabolism decreases around 2 percent as we age and we require 150 fewer calories per day each decade after age 20, our nutritional needs do not. Snacking on foods high in sugars and sodium can contribute to a steady weight gain over the years. 

Nutritionists recommend consuming foods low in calories but filling, and to limit yourself to around 100 to 150 calories. Afternoon snacks high in protein such as yogurt or low-fat cottage cheese allow you to feel fuller longer. Studies found those who ate high-protein snacks rather than crackers or chocolate ate up to a 100 fewer calories at dinner. 

Fiber is another component to smart snacking. Wright explains, “Fiber aids digestive health and can assist us with blood sugar control and lowering cholesterol.” Good snacks high in fiber include almonds, unsalted soy nuts, berries, carrots with hummus, and whole grain crackers.

Take 7,000 Steps a Day to Better Health

We have all heard about the value of walking 10,000 steps a day but recent studies show it may not actually be the magic number. One study published by JAMA found walking 7,000 steps or more a day may decrease the risk for mortality and offer better overall health. 

In the cohort study of 2110 adults with a mean follow-up of 10.8 years, participants who walked at least 7000 steps a day, compared with those taking fewer than 7000 steps, to have a 50% to 70% lower risk of mortality. Researchers also noted, “There was no association of step intensity with mortality regardless of adjustment for step volume.”

A 2020 study found a decreased risk for mortality in participants who took 8,000 steps a day than those who only took 4,000 steps a day. In the same year, another study found more steps taken each day were linked to lower rates of diabetes. Researchers say the bottom line is evidence points to the importance of increased physical activity. 

Before you begin walking, talk to your healthcare provider; and if are just beginning to exercise, be sure to start slow. Wear properly-fitted, supportive shoes, and if walking during the day, wear sunscreen, protective clothing and a hat. Could Surgical Hip and Knee Replacements Become Something of the Past?

Researchers say a future of hip or knee “replacements” done without surgery may be on the horizon. By employing a combination of drugs and stem-cell therapies, it may be possible to “repair cartilage before osteoarthritis sets in or an operation is needed.”  

Osteoarthritis, commonly afflicting the elderly, is a degenerative disease attributed to "wear and tear" but can also be caused by earlier sports injuries, obesity and other trauma to the cartilage around the knee, hip or shoulder joints. Experts explain the loss of cartilage, which does not have its own blood supply or nerves, limits its ability to mend itself and is the major cause of joint pain and arthritis affecting over 32.5 million people in the U.S. In 2017 alone, there were 754,000 knee replacements done and 448,000 hip replacements.  

Michael Longaker, a professor of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and co-director of its Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, explains the goal of his research is to not wait for osteoarthritis to develop, but to halt the degenerative process so people never need to have a joint replaced. His team’s focus is on programming stem cells to become cartilage cells. Other researchers are working to develop drugs that stop the progression of “wear and tear” on joints. Researchers are also looking at methods to “effectively deliver new cells and compounds” as well as designing materials to help new cells integrate with existing tissue. Scientists admit they still have a ways to go before they will have alternative therapies in place but remain optimistic.

Doctors say people taking certain medications such as diuretics as well as the elderly have to be careful about retaining adequate fluids in their body during periods of extreme heat. High temperatures can rob the body of essential minerals in the blood called electrolytes and can be especially dangerous for people with heart or kidney disease and diabetes. Records from Medicare report hospital admissions during heat waves of two or more days are most often the result of “heat stroke, sunstroke, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and acute kidney failure.”

Dehydration and exposure to high temperatures can cause heat exhaustion and lead to heat stroke, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms include heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, rapid pulse, and muscle cramps.

However, in 86-year-old psychologist Katharine Esty’s fourth book called, EightySomethings: A Practical Guide to Letting Go, Aging Well, and Finding Unexpected Happiness, she strongly dispels this notion. In fact, her research found elderly adults are happier and hold a more positive outlook than most of us thought. Esty explains, “The stereotypes that people have in their minds about old age are just completely wrong.” She adds, the type of activities people in their eighties are doing is stunning and many are pain-free, living full productive lives.

It turns out a lot of octogenarians are still working full- or part-time jobs, or finding fulfillment in doing some sort of volunteer work through their communities or church. Esty says having a purpose in life, regardless of age, gives a person’s life meaning. The entire month of October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. Started in 1985, the National Breast Cancer Awareness month began as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. Breast cancer survivor and former first lady Betty Ford kicked off the week-long event. The symbol of the pink ribbon was introduced in 1992 and sponsored by the Estée Lauder cosmetic company, which handed out 1.5 million ribbons. It is still used today to promote awareness and to support survivals and those who died from the disease. 

The month-long activities are designed to increase awareness and raise funds for research, and educate the public about breast cancer and the benefits of early detection. The Risk for Pulmonary Embolism Increases with Age

Medical experts say the risk for a pulmonary embolism (PE, also known as a lung embolism) doubles every 10 years after the age of 60. It is a condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot. Typically a PE is caused by blood clots, called deep vein thrombosis, that travel from the legs or occasionally other parts of the body into the lungs. Both men and women are equally at risk and certain inherited conditions, heart disease, surgery, cancer, kidney disease or lack of mobility from bed rest or long car or plane trips increases a person’s risk. 

Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fever, and swelling or pain in the leg. As a PE blocks the flow of blood to the lungs, it can be life threatening and doctors warn anyone experiencing unexpected symptoms to seek immediate medical help.  

The Mayo Clinic reports “about one-third of people with undiagnosed and untreated pulmonary embolism don't survive. When the condition is diagnosed and treated promptly, however, that number drops dramatically.” Treatment includes blood thinners (anticoagulants), clot dissolvers (thrombolytics), and/or surgery.

People at risk for blood clots may be prescribed blood thinners (anticoagulants) before and after an operation or during a hospital stay for conditions such as a heart attack or stroke.  In addition compression stockings, leg elevation and physical activity all help to prevent pulmonary embolisms.

Extreme Worrying & Anxiety May be Signs of a Serious Disorder

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) says the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder among older adults. Experts say worrying about everything in your life including worrying about too much worrying may be a sign of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The National Institute of Mental Health explain people suffering from GAD feel extremely worried or nervous about all kinds of things even when there is no reason to feel nervous about them. This constant worry can cause anxious feelings that interfere with one’s life and result in an inability to stay focused on daily tasks. 

Some individuals suffering from GAD even worry about their safety and the safety of loved one or feel something bad is going to happen. The disorder can cause distress socially or at the workplace and shift from one concern to another. Symptoms of GAD include:

  • Persistent, excessive worry about several different things for at least six months

  • Fatigue, difficulty sleeping, or restlessness

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Irritability

  • Muscle tension

  • Feeling tense or "on edge"

People with a timid or introverted personality may be more prone to GAD or have a family history of anxiety disorders. Traumatic or negative experiences can lead to GAD, especially during childhood. Experts say GAD must be diagnosed by a healthcare provider.
