Normal Aging Causes Seniors to Process New Information Slower

November 11, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgment and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

At MorningStar of Pasadena, we offer independent living and assisted living as well as experienced memory care. Our holistic approach to senior living creates an atmosphere filled with love, care and compassion.  We also recognize that it is important for our residents to continue learning and contributing, which is why we offer such a wide range of meaningful wellness programs and activities that engage the mind, body, and spirit.  Please visit our website to learn what sets our community apart from other senior living Pasadena, CA offers and why MorningStar is such a great place to call home.

When a Loved One is Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease

November 11, 2022 by MStar Living

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all.  Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold.  Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.”  They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better.  Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors.  Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned.  You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day.  A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so.  Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings.  They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses.  Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

At MorningStar at River Oaks, our goal is to provide the best senior living Houston has to offer, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our memory care residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. Would You Like to Lose a Few Pounds?

November 09, 2022 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help you reach your goal.  When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not over consume.

This is where portion control plays a part.  Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that whole foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions.  In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However, to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend.  The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address age group, gender, and activity level of the particular person.  Add to that, portion size is a critical component to losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.”

For exceptional memory care or assisted living, Houston area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at River Oaks for a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Our beautiful home provides assisted living and memory care with a wide range of amenities and services to meet every need including a nutritional, delicious dining service.  Contact us or visit our website for more information.

The Difference Between Alzheimer's and Dementia

November 09, 2022 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Many of us, especially seniors, have heard or known someone with Alzheimer’s disease and have an idea of the devastation it causes. While there are other types of diseases categorized as dementia, Alzheimer’s is by far the most common form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. You should know dementia is not actually a specific disease but refers to a decline in a person’s mental ability to such a degree it interferes with their daily life.

It is also important to understand dementia is not a normal condition of aging but rather caused by damage to brain cells that affect a person’s memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills including an ability to communicate. There are several types of clinical dementia including: Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; dementia with Lewy Body; and frontotemporal dementia. Mixed dementia is the term used when a person has both Alzheimer’s and another form of dementia, which is causing their mental decline.

The Alzheimer’s Association says the “most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is trouble remembering new information because the disease typically impacts the part of the brain associated with learning first.” As the disease progresses, the person is robbed of many other abilities such as speaking, swallowing and walking.

To help get the proper diagnosis and rule out other causes that may be treatable such as side effects from a medication, it is important to see your doctor. If warranted, they may have you see a specialist that can do further testing.

Along with independent and assisted living, Pasadena, CA’s MorningStar community offers care to those with memory impairment from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We are a team of compassionate, professionals who feel privileged to serve our most “tender residents.”  We also consider supporting family members as part of our job and recognize that a diagnosis of dementia is traumatizing for all involved. Contact us or visit our website for availability, pricing information and to schedule a tour.

MorningStar Senior Living’s communities across the U.S. have a passionate commitment to serving seniors, earning a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. If you are looking for the finest memory care, independent living or assisted living Pasadena, CA offers, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

The Importance of Pets in Our Lives

November 07, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Research has shown that having a pet can improve our mental health, cardiovascular health and PTSD symptoms.  In fact, even if you do not own a pet but just spend some time interacting with animals, it can lift your spirits and decrease stress.  Also, during times of isolation and uncertainty, many of us feel our pets are more important than ever.

The great thing about pets is they offer unconditional love and loyal companionship.   Caring for an animal can be a welcome distraction from life’s other worries and can provide more meaning to our life.  Moreover, how can you feel upset or angry when sitting with a cat on your lap and hearing the relaxing, melodious sound of their purr?  Research has shown that an act as simple as petting a dog or cat has been shown to reduce stress and help regulate our mood.

Many people believe their pet has the ability to pick up on their emotions and know when they are sad or stressed and need a little “extra love.”   In addition, dogs need exercise so many dog owners are motivated to get outside and exercise, which is always a good thing.  However, experts caution that before you rush out and adopt an animal , think about how much time you have to care for one, and do you have the money to pay for the extra expenses.  Also, if your choice is a dog, are you physically able to provide the animal with the daily exercise they need?

MorningStar at River Oaks is dedicated to providing the finest senior living Houston offers, with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  We understand how important our residents’ furry friends are to them, which is why we are pet friendly. Our beautiful community has 85 assisted living suites, and another 27 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Looking for a Senior Living Community for Yourself or a Loved One?

November 07, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Experts recommend that your first step before beginning the actual search for the “perfect” senior living community should be compiling answers to some important questions.  The first is to evaluate the level of care mom or dad needs, or if you are looking for yourself, be honest about the care you need to improve the quality of your life.

Also, look at your finances to determine your range of affordability.  Include pensions, annuities and other retirement income as well as social security.  An Elder law attorney can help you explore other options including your eligibility for Veterans benefits, long-term care insurance, real estate assets that can be sold or leveraged, life insurance, tax benefits, etc.

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s situation, begin your search of senior living communities in your preferred location that meet the above criteria as well as offer onsite amenities and services desired.  If mom or dad no longer drives, does the community offer transportation to doctor appointments? Is a meal service included?  Is it important for you to have a fitness center, hair salon, theater, etc. onsite?  Do you need parking?  These are just a few of the questions to consider when looking for the perfect community.  Once you narrow down your options, give the communities a call to inquiry about availability, pricing, and to set up a tour.

At MorningStar of Pasadena, you will find our beautiful all-inclusive home has it all including independent living, assisted living, memory care, companion living, and respite care.  Our community allows seniors to comfortably age in place with an array of resort-style amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities. Apartments come in a range of floorplan and configurations designed to meet a variety of preferences and needs.  We are committed to provide the best senior living Pasadena, CA offers and invite you to set up a tour to see our exceptional community.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Are You Considering a 55+ Community?

October 28, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Statistics show approximately one million Americans reside in some type of senior living community, and by 2030, the number is expected to double. At the same time, the number of seniors 85 and older is projected to triple from 5.7 million in 2011 to 14.1 million in 2040. Within the category of senior living, there are several options available for older adults including independent living (also known as retirement communities), which are specifically designed for adults 55+.

The reason so many seniors are turning to independent living is they love the many advantages it offers. Residents get peace of mind with predictable budgeting and not having to worry about unexpected repairs or costs associated with home maintenance. Another important perk of independent living communities is built-in companionship, and in many cases, activities and programming, and tasty meals they no longer have to cook.

Senior living communities like MorningStar of Kirkland allow seniors to enjoy stress-free retirement years, extend their independence and continue the adventure. Newly opened in March 2022, MorningStar of Kirkland offers 151 stylish apartments in a variety of floorplans.  Our luxury amenities include chef-inspired meals, an indoor pool, fitness center and studio, sport courts, bistro/bar and other indoor and outdoor venues.    In addition, We offer a broad range of wellness programs and activities designed for residents’ physical, mental, social and spiritual connection. And in case you were wondering, we are pet friendly.

Lower Your Risk of Health Disease by Getting Enough Sleep

October 26, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. The Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems.

In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more.

One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night's sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forgo sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.”

Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is similar to being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more in an effort to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods.

Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.

If you are looking for senior housing in Kirkland, WA, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, a true destination for successful aging.  We offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting.  Our beautiful home has 151 stylish apartments in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need.  Please see our website for more information about MorningStar of Kirkland.

Do You Want to Get More Exercise?

October 26, 2022 by MStar Living in Retirement Communities

Too many older Americans used to exercise with some frequency but somehow life got in the way, and they now feel out of shape. Whether you used to exercise or never formally did, doctors say it is not too late to start and you will be better for it. However, before beginning any new exercise regime, please consult with your healthcare provider.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) says deciding to become active is the best thing you can do for your physical as well as mental health and is a big step toward helping you stay independent as you age. They recommend seniors do some type of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, like brisk walking or fast dancing, at least three times a week (for a total of 150+ minutes per week). In addition, include some type of weight bearing exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups or weight lifting two times a week. Your optimal weekly workout should be a combination of cardio and muscle strengthening exercises along with exercises to improve balance and flexibility.

The NIA offers tips on how to safely start exercising. They say after getting the go-ahead from your physician, start slowly. If you need, begin with only a few minutes a day and build from there. Listen to your body as pushing too hard early-on can lead to injury or end up with you getting discouraged and quitting altogether.

They say you should include a warm-up and cool-down period and to be aware of your surroundings if exercising outdoors. Bring your I.D. and carry your cell phone, tell others where you are going and when you plan to be back, and stick to areas with other people around. Make sure to drink plenty of water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the type of activity you plan to do.

Driving Safely as You Age

October 25, 2022 by MStar Living in assisted living

Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others.  The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion.  Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease.  They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.

A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision.  Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars.  Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done.  Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.

Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy.  It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good.  Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills.  You may need to re-evaluate your driving every few months, especially if you find yourself having incidents of accidents that almost happened.

The MedicineNet website has some safe driving tips for seniors:

Planning before you leave:

  • Plan to drive on streets you know.

  • Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.

  • Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.

  • Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.

  • Don't drive when you are stressed or tired.

While you are driving:

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Stay off the cell phone.

  • Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.

  • Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.

  • Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)

  • Use your rear window defroster to keep the back window clear at all times.

  • Always keep your headlights on.

For assisted living Houston seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at River Oaks, the perfect home to comfortably and safely age in place.  Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day restaurant-style dining, scheduled transportation, fitness center, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle for residents. What Did You Have for Breakfast?

October 21, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-morning. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit. Another incentive for eating protein in the morning is nutritionists say it can help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period of time.

MorningStar of Hillsboro is a luxury 55+ community with stylish apartments for independent living. Our all-inclusive community offers a dining service under the direction of an Executive Chef, a wide range of floor plans to meet our residents’ varying needs, and onsite amenities and services to provide carefree retirement years.  We are committed to provide the best senior living Hillsboro, OR offers and invite you to set up a tour to see our exceptional community.

We also have a partnership with Genesis Rehabilitation, a leading provider of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and respiratory therapy for older adults. The alliance includes full-time, in-house Genesis therapists and expands our resident services in integrated wellness, promoting optimal independence and abundant life for seniors.

Help Prevent Falls with Balance Exercises

October 17, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s statistics show that one in four Americans aged 65 years and older falls each year.  Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults, and the number of falls will continue to increase as America’s baby boomers grow older.

While these are worrisome facts, experts say there are some simple exercises seniors can do to help prevent falls and maintain their independence. Remember a common injury caused by an elderly person falling is a hip fracture that can seriously impact their life.

Most balance exercises are easy to learn and can be done anywhere.  The Mayo Clinic explains that while many exercises including walking can help maintain good balance, there are specific exercises targeted at improving a senior’s balance and stability.  They do caution however that if you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, to get your doctor's okay before starting balance exercises.

Examples of balance exercises include: standing on one foot, walking heel to toe, back leg raises, and side leg raises.  To do the standing on one foot exercise, stand behind a sturdy chair; gripping for balance, lift one foot off the floor.  Hold for 10 seconds and then repeat with the opposite leg.  Repeat the exercise several times and increase the repetition as your strength increases.

Walking heel to toe is done by positioning the heel of one foot in front of the toes of the other foot.  Your heel and toes should be touching.  Now select a spot ahead of you and focus on it to help keep you steady as you walk.  Try to step forward for as many as 20 steps.  Be sure to ask your healthcare provider for other balance exercises.

At MorningStar at River Oaks, we promote a healthy engaged lifestyle which includes an onsite fitness center and exercise classes to make it easy for residents to keep moving.  Our various enrichment activities and wellness programs are designed to enhance and support our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social connections.  Visit our website for further information on the finest senior living Houston has to offer.

This post is for informational purposes only.  Please consult your healthcare provider before starting any exercises.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating true homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest senior living Houston offers.

Are You Wondering If a Senior Community Is Right for You?

October 12, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Apartments

As more and more seniors watch friends and relatives move into senior communities, many wonder if it is the right step for them. While obviously a decision of this magnitude should be carefully made, there is data showing the majority of seniors in retirement communities are happy they made the move. In fact, studies further indicate seniors in such communities tend to live longer. One report from the United States General Accounting Office (GAO), states “seniors who choose to live in retirement communities live 1.5 to 2 years longer than seniors who choose to retire in their homes.”

Researchers explain that many communities offer seniors a higher quality of life with their wide range of activities including physical fitness classes, group games and other entertainment opportunities. Also, we all know maintaining a home can be stressful and even more so as we age, while senior communities provide a virtually carefree lifestyle.

Independent living and assisted living communities seamlessly provide the chance to interact and socialize with like-minded people in the same stage of life, making it easy to meet and connect with people who share your interests. Again, studies find “seniors are 22% more likely to live longer and lead more fulfilling lives if they're given the chance to socialize with others.” Moreover, researchers say active seniors have better immune systems and a lower risk of dementia; and that loneliness can lead to a greater risk of high blood pressure, depression and early mortality.

At MorningStar of Pasadena, we offer all the comforts of home with 115 stylish senior apartments with graciously appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, billiards room, fitness center, gardens, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. For exceptional independent or assisted living, Pasadena, CA seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar, a destination for successful aging.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.
