A Wide Variety of Products Help Older Adults Live Better Lives

February 26, 2025 by MStar Living in Independent Living

It seems as if every day the market offers more and more tech devices, gadgets and mobility aids designed to keep older adults moving and give them as independent a lifestyle as possible. Mobility aids include everything from canes and walkers to fall prevention items, wheelchairs, personal scooters, powered wheelchairs, transfer devices and more. The range of products is huge as in the example of walkers. While there are two basic types, standard or rolling (sometimes called rollators); the selection is varied and includes many options and add-ons such as seats and storage baskets.

Technology devices include a variety of products like health monitoring systems and cognitive aids to keep seniors safer and more connected. Today’s SOS alerts systems and fall detectors enable seniors to get help when and where they need it. Amplification devices make it easier to hear the TV, and phones are designed to be easy to use and see. Electronic medication reminders help seniors stay on track with daily meds.

Products such as shower chairs, grab bars and raised toilet seats can make a bathroom safer for seniors and help avoid falls. Ergonomic, adaptive kitchens tools are designed for seniors with arthritis and weak hand grip strength. These include specially designed bottle, cap and jar openers; and scooped plates and bowls to reduce movement.

Adaptive, light-weight tools for gardening enthusiasts also make it easier to dig in the soil and reduce hand and wrist fatigue while weeding. Raised beds and trellises eliminate the need to get down on the ground, and a rolling gardening chair cart makes it easier to get around. Thick kneeling pads are designed to more comfortably knee or sit on the ground, a few even offer cup holders and pockets for tools. Check out the Internet for other useful items.

Community Living is a Popular Choice for Older Adults

December 20, 2024 by MStar Living in Independent Living

As the population ages, 55+ independent living communities have become a popular option for seniors around the country.  The appeal includes making their lives easier by moving into a maintenance free apartment that meets their needs without giving up their independence.  Today’s communities’ offers older adults security and safety as well as peace of mind knowing others are always around.

Independent living Pasadena is a place where similarly aged people in a similar time of life comfortably live among one another.  Moreover, such communities solve a growing problem reported by many seniors, that of loneliness.  As we grow older our social circle gets smaller as many older adults have retired from jobs that created opportunities for day-to-day contact with acquaintances and business associates.  In addition, some seniors no longer feel comfortable driving, which in turn, can limit their ability to socialize.  Study after study has shown that isolation becomes a bigger problem as we age and can lead to severe loneliness and even depression.  On the other hand, independent living Pasadena naturally promotes new friendships and regular socialization.

At MorningStar of Pasadena, we offer stylish senior apartments that allow you to fully enjoy your retirement years stress free.  Floor plans include studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom configurations and feature kitchenettes, handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  Our staff handles all the maintenance and housekeeping is included.  And in case you were wondering, MorningStar is pet friendly!

Residents enjoy common areas including beautiful gathering spaces, art studio, bistro, theater, salon, music room, fitness center, sky terrace and more.  Healthy, nutritious meals created by our Executive Chef are served in our full-service dining room. In addition to independent living, we offer assisted living, memory care, respite care and short-term stays.   Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s senior living in Pasadena, CA.

MorningStar of Pasadena Offers Independent Living

September 13, 2024 by MStar Living in Independent Living

MorningStar’s senior living in Pasadena, CA includes different options. If this is something you might consider, we encourage you to take a closer look at the many benefits of moving into an independent living community. While some seniors feel strongly about remaining in their homes after retirement, other seniors are very happy to have discovered the advantages of community living.

To start with, for many seniors the family home starts to feel very empty once the kids have moved out.  In addition, you are still stuck with all the upkeep and maintenance of the home including yard care and the costs of repairs and replacement.  Senior living on the other hand, means no more concerns about maintenance inside or out.

An independent living community also offers the security of predictable budgeting, which allows you to know just what your expenses will be as most are included in your monthly fee.  It also solves another problem many seniors face – loneliness.  As we age, older adults can have difficulty getting out and about, and may be at risk of losing their social ties.  Research shows seniors who are isolated and lonely are more likely to develop health problems. It also offers the advantage of a private apartment and the chance to socialize whenever you choose with built-in companionship.

MorningStar of Pasadena provides residents with activities and programming that ensure you are never bored.  Whether you want to attend an exercise class, play cards or a board game, get a haircut, or catch a movie, independent living gives you the chance to do it all on-site.

Moreover, it is typically less stressful for seniors to make the transition to independent living before they “need” to move into assisted living.  Selling your home and moving can be stressful and it is much easier to do while you are still able and healthy.

Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional, assisted living or memory care at MorningStar of Pasadena.  We look forward to hearing from you.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. Take Care of Your Aging Eyes

January 01, 2024 by MStar Living in Independent Living

Did you know it is estimated 895 million people worldwide will have some level of vision impairment by 2050. The Lancet reports it signals a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years and includes loss of vision from cataracts and glaucoma. Experts say while many vision problems can be treated, in some cases they can also be prevented by adopting a few simple habits.

If you have already gotten into the habit of wearing sunscreen and a sun-blocking hat when you are outdoors for any period of time, optometrists say you need to complete your protection by making sure to wear protective sunglasses. Exposure to UV increases our risk for cataracts and your sunglasses should have a label reading “100 percent protection from UV and UVB rays” or “100 percent protection against UV 400.”  If you are outside working for long hours, consider wrap-around style sunglasses, and if you are doing work such as trimming bushes or chopping wood, be sure to wear safety sunglasses.

As the risk for eye diseases increase as we age, the National Institute on Aging recommends having your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. For those over age 50, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional. Everyone over the age of 60 should get a dilated eye exam every year or two. Regardless of age, most people with diabetes or high blood pressure need to get a dilated exam at least once a year.

Other ways to protect our eyes as we age is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Additionally, stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. If you do have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to learn how to manage the condition/disease and follow your doctor’s guidelines.

MorningStar of Kirkland is proud to offer adults 55+ a carefree lifestyle to give you more time to the things you love. Our beautiful community offers a selection of independent living apartments, luxury amenities such as indoor and outdoor dining venues, pool, sport courts, art studio, and fitness center to promote a healthy lifestyle for residents. Be Aware of Financial Scams Targeted to Older Adults

October 27, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living

Each year elderly seniors fall prey to ruthless schemes that rob them of their money and identity. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), In 2021, there were over 92,000 older victims of fraud resulting in $1.7 billion in losses. The sad part is that it is often a result of a senior’s trusting nature or feelings of isolation and loneliness; or in some cases, a senior may have cognitive issues that impair their judgement and decision-making skills.

Experts explain there are several reasons why seniors are more susceptible to fraudulent schemes starting with the fact they tend to be very trusting. Our elderly population was typically raised to be polite and agreeable to others, which in turn can make them more susceptible to fraud. Lonely seniors can easily be preyed upon as they are willing to stay on the phone and engage in conversation with a stranger.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) alerts the public to scams targeting seniors so if you have a parent or other elderly loved ones who may be at risk, look at the information and discuss the various schemes used with them. One scam frequently used is for a thief to call unsuspecting victims and pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration, or Medicare. They have many angles such as saying the individual has unpaid taxes or their Social Security or Medicare benefits are in danger of being cut off. They then demand payment (in the case of unpaid taxes) or ask for personal identifying information, which is then used to commit fraud. These impersonators often “spoof” the actual phone numbers of the government agency, or call from the same area code for Washington, DC, tricking the victim into believing the call is legitimate.

The NCOA says there are ways to avoid getting scammed such as never giving out your personal information to anyone but a trusted family member, friend or your professional financial advisor. In addition, never make big financial decisions without consulting with one of those trusted people. Also, do not give out personal PIN numbers, or Medicare and other financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call or know the person.

Other commonsense advice includes being wary of high-pressure salespersons, never signing a contract until you understand it entirely, and to be suspicious of unexpected announcements of winning money, trips, or other prizes. Experts say it is most likely a hoax. Always take your time when making financial decisions and do not give blanket approval to a vendor for medical equipment and other purchases.

MorningStar of Kirkland offers the very best in independent living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create an atmosphere that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Urinary Tract Infections are More Common in Older Adults

October 18, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living

Experts explain the more we know about urinary tract infections, the better we can protect ourselves from getting one as well as quickly getting proper treatment when we do have one. According to a 2019 report from Therapeutic Advances in Urology, 50% to 60% of women experience a UTI, defined as an overgrowth of bacteria in the urinary tract, at least once in their lifetime.

Understanding the urinary tract is a good place to start in understanding the infection. The lower urinary tract includes the urethra, the tube allowing urine to exit the body; and the bladder, which stores and empties the urine through the urethra. The upper urinary tract includes the ureters that carry the urine from the kidneys to the bladder; and the kidneys making the urine.

UTIs are more common in the lower urinary tract and symptoms include a change in the color and smell of urine. It may also appear cloudy and be dark or red looking, and smell bad. Many feel as if they are unable to completely empty their bladder and may experience pain when urinating. In some cases people experience fever and chills, pain in the pelvic region and a need to urinate more frequently.

Infections in the upper urinary tract involve the kidneys, and while less common can be more severe. A person may have a fever above 102.5 F, blood in the urine and flu-like symptoms.

Frequent UTIs in women can result from bladder prolapse, kidney stones and being post-menopausal. Although UTIs are more common in women, doctors say men do get them; and more often as they age. Many older men suffer from an enlarged prostate, making it harder to completely empty the bladder and setting up an environment for bacteria to develop in the remaining urine.

Doctors say there are some steps we can take to help prevent UTIs including staying hydrated during the day and urinating when you have the urge. Other self-care for women includes urinating after sex and being careful to wipe from front to back. Medical professionals say avoiding douching and using powders and sprays in the genital area as much as possible. If you have diabetes, it is important to manage the disease as best as possible for many reasons including being more susceptible to UTIs.

The Difference Between Independent Living and Assisted Living

September 18, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living

Often families are confused with the terms “independent living” and “assisted living” and are not sure which one is best suited for their needs. To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe senior living communities that are designed specifically for seniors 55 and older who want to and can live without any help. Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy but require assistance in their daily lives.

Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle. While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, day trips and meals. Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with routine chores that need to be done when owning a home.

At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour supervision. Generally a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family. Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

If you are looking for the best independent or assisted living in Pasadena, CA, MorningStar is it. We offer privacy, comfort, and security, and a staff that works hard to meet the needs of our remarkable residents. MorningStar of Pasadena has stylish suites in a variety of floor plans and configurations. Amenities include all-day dining, billiards room, library, theater/chapel, fitness center, and scheduled transportation along with wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Now Is the Time To Try a New Hobby

July 17, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living

For many, retirement means an end to a long career and a busier lifestyle. As relaxing as that sounds, research shows it is important for people to continue to feel actively engaged regardless of their age. One interesting and fun way to do it is with a hobby as they are a good way to keep our brains sharp, relieve stress and anxiety, and lessen obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

One example of an all-around hobby is gardening. Not only does the person benefit from their labor in the form of flowers, fruits or vegetables, experts say gardening offers physical and mental benefits. These include reducing stress, giving the person a sense of achievement, getting out into fresh air and staying fit. If you worry about the physical work involved in gardening, there are tools and methods designed to make it easier. Raised beds eliminate the need for bending and kneeling on the ground as does vertical gardening and pot gardening that keeps things at arms’ reach.

Another hobby beneficial for seniors is playing a musical instrument. For instance, when playing the piano, the hands and brain must coordinate. The bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain and stimulate a whole range of brain functions that provide numerous benefits. If you aren’t musical, consider knitting as it offers the same two-sided movements along with the satisfaction of creating a baby blanket for a little one or a pair of socks for a homeless shelter.

Working on jigsaw puzzles, coloring, birdwatching and photography are all calming, brain stimulating, fun activities. Experts say many hobbies do not require commitment, and if at first you don’t find something to keep your interest, give another one a try.

If you are looking for exceptional senior living in Hillsboro, OR, MorningStar may be your answer. We offer seniors a comfortable home to socialize and make new friends as well as activities and wellness programs to enjoy life to the fullest. Amenities include multiple dining venues, theater, art studio, salon, swimming pool, fitness center, resident garden beds, and more. MorningStar of Pasadena’s Dining Experience

June 12, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living

MorningStar of Pasadena is a vibrant 55+ community located 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. An expansion of our community is currently under construction and will provide additional independent living apartments when it opens in early 2025. We are one of seven MorningStar communities either operating or under construction in California.

As a MorningStar of Pasadena resident, you will be treated to a whole host of resort-style amenities and services including a five-star dining experience. All residents are treated to meals prepared under the supervision of our Executive Chef and served restaurant-style in our beautiful dining room. We understand that food is a healing medicine unlike any other and is one of the great joys of living. We also know food always tastes better and is enjoyed more when shared in community and breaking bread together helps to bond us as a family and as friends.

Our meals are prepared largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients from the highest quality local producers. MorningStar’s Chef looks forward to feedback from residents and is open to suggestions. At each meal, residents will have choices to self-manage their dietary restrictions such as low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat dishes.

We also believe in BrainWise foods and use ingredients known to support brain health with their high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Thus, as the MorningStar’s culinary team strives to create meals that delight the eye and palate, they also leverage the phenomenal benefits of superfoods such as Omega 3 fats, acai berries, dark chocolate and dark greens.

Our community offers 114 stylish suites for either independent living or assisted living for those that need help with the activities of daily living. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 28 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. While residents’ apartments are their own private nest, our community also has inviting common areas both inside and out that are designed to encourage residents to sit and relax with friends. Please contact us for more information about luxury senior living in Pasadena, CA.

Interested in Community Living but Feel it May be Too Expensive?

June 04, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living, Senior Housing, Retirement Communities

While a retirement community may sound appealing, many seniors worry the cost is too high. The truth is, there is a wide range in the cost of independent living communities based on things like geographic location, services and amenities that all impact your monthly fee.

Luxury communities in metropolitan areas tend to be priced higher as do those in more desirable neighborhoods. Also, the apartment’s square footage, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, location within the community such as sought-after views or end-units, balconies or private patios can all up the price.

Experts say it is important to consider the value of the services and amenities you receive. In your own home, you may have paid for things like lawn care and landscaping services as well as encountered unexpected home repairs and maintenance upkeep. Utilities and property taxes for a home that may have more space than you need at this stage in your life can be costly. Additionally, safely aging in place can often require expensive home modifications.

The social aspect of community living is something many seniors say they were surprised by the amount of value it offers. At MorningStar of Hillsboro, we make it easier to connect formally as well as informally with restaurant-style dining, bistro/bar, life enrichment room, amphitheater, art studio, fitness center, swimming pool, resident garden beds and a complement of wellness programs. For your convenience, we offer underground parking and bike storage.

MorningStar of Hillsboro represents the finest in luxury senior housing. Residents enjoy carefree retirement years with opportunities for new friendships, predictable budgeting and activities amid beautiful surroundings. Our contemporary-style apartments are maintenance free and allow you to spend more time doing what you love best including being able to travel without worry. If you are interested in retirement communities in Hillsboro, OR, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

It’s Possible to Live Healthier, More Productive Lives Than Previous Generations

May 30, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living, Senior Living, Senior Apartments

If we are lucky, we are all going to get a lot older, but experts say with a few commonsense adjustments, we can live healthier, more productive lives than our grandparents or even parents. Moreover, it is worth our while to plan for a long life as mortality rates have raised from just an average age of 47 for men and women in 1900 to older adults routinely reaching their eighties, nineties and upward.

In fact, studies report it is possible to grow older without a significant decline in health. Linda Fried, dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and director of the Robert Butler Columbia Aging Center, says, “The idea that living longer necessarily means enduring significant declines in health has changed in the last two decades.” She adds, “It’s possible to increase your health span as long as your life span. Some decline in health and function is inevitable. But the image that older life is about decrepitude turns out not to be right.”

Spending decades working in the field of gerontology, Harry "Rick" Moody reminds older adults that even if they are living with health challenges, they should not lose sight of the opportunity for living a meaningful and positive life. He says at 76 his hearing is bad but he compensates by wearing a hearing aid. His advice is "If you compensate, you’ll age successfully. If you don’t, you won’t age successfully.”

Strategies for healthy aging include not limiting yourself by saying you are too old, to keep learning, keep exercising and to eat a healthy diet. Staying close to family and friends, getting enough sleep and using adaptive skills to compensate for things like short-term memory loss and a general slow-down of cognitive and physical abilities are also part of the process.

At MorningStar of Hillsboro, our goal is to provide seniors the physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connections to lead productive and engaged lives. We do this through a full component of wellness programs and activities, hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a team that feels honored to serve seniors.
