Benefits for Assisted Living Available to Eligible Veterans or Surviving Spouse

January 13, 2025 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Residents of the MorningStar Senior Living communities include veterans from all branches of the military and we are honored to serve them. As a MorningStar team member eloquently said, “Seniors speak powerfully to the fact that freedom comes at a cost. It requires that you choose to do the right thing which almost always includes sacrifice. Whether it’s time, money or comfort, those who came before us chose to sacrifice to build a better society.”

When we meet a potential resident who is a veteran or a surviving spouse of a vet, and in need of assisted living; we are pleased to direct them to a “Financial Concierge.”  These financial services experts have the knowledge to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance,” which is a benefit offered through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. Aid & Attendance benefits are a tax-free pension paid directly to a qualified veteran or their spouse in the form of monthly payments, which is subject to change annually.

The National Care Planning Council estimates up to 25% of seniors could potentially apply for Aid & Attendance. These benefits can be used toward care in an assisted living community such as MorningStar at River Oaks. Check out our website as we have a whole page explaining the benefit, a quick 5-minute test to see if you qualify, and our contact number for more answers and information.

MorningStar at River Oaks has 85 well-designed suites for assisted living and another 27 suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our residents enjoy healthy, delicious meals served all-day in our full-service dining room, luxury amenities, wellness programs and built-in companionship.  If you think you would like to hear more about MorningStar’s senior living in Houston, please contact us. We would love to set up a tour so you can see firsthand all we have to offer.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Couples are Welcome at MorningStar at River Oaks

September 06, 2024 by MStar Living in assisted living

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; an assisted living community may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facility.”

Many assisted living communities like MorningStar at River Oaks welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to the resident. We offer an array of floor plans starting with studios and one-bedroom options to larger two-bedroom, two bath suites. Suites feature a kitchenette (studios) with refrigerator and microwave or a kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, cooktop and dishwasher (one and two-bedrooms). All suites have a handicap-accessible bathroom, emergency call system and washer/dryer.  Moreover, MorningStar welcomes your four-footed furry family member.

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. Please contact MorningStar at River Oaks to learn more.  In addition to assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. An Assisted Living Community is Often a Better Alternative to Living Alone

August 19, 2024 by MStar Living in assisted living

Many older adults are pleasantly surprised to discover that moving to an assisted living community is not the worst thing to happen to them.  In fact, statistics show that for many seniors it is a healthier, more agreeable alternative to living alone.  The reason some seniors are initially reluctant to make the move is that they are unaware of the significant changes that have occurred in senior living over the years especially in terms of care options and amenities.

Today’s communities like MorningStar at River Oaks offer assisted living in Houston that is geared toward meeting aging adult’s physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs.  Also, for many seniors, assisted living offers a better choice for those who require help in their daily lives than receiving in-home care services.  This is because assisted living communities offer 24/7 care and provide the security of knowing help is not far away in the event of an emergency.

For seniors living alone, assisted living provides the opportunity for socializing whether it is with planned activities or in common areas designed to encourage relaxed interactions.  Even if you are someone who values your privacy, community living offers the benefit of private suites with the comfort of having others around.

Another reason you may want to consider assisted living is that communities such as MorningStar are designed for the mobility and safety of seniors who may not be as sturdy on their feet as they once were.   To modify your own home to accommodate physical limitations can be quite expensive.

At MorningStar at River Oaks, we also provide scheduled transportation and planned outings to a variety of places such as shopping, parks or cultural events.  Furthermore, for many older adults cooking and preparing meals is difficult and we solve that problem by providing tasty, nutritional daily meals.  Please contact us to set up a tour to determine if assisted living may be the right decision for you or your loved one.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. Assisted Living Offers Support With the Activities of Daily Living

August 09, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Many families mistakenly think senior living and particularly assisted living is just a more luxurious nursing home.  The fact is nursing homes are intended for people who are unable to care for themselves due to physical or mental conditions and require around-the-clock skilled nursing care.  Residents may be bedridden or in wheelchairs and receive ongoing palliative and preventative long-term care.

Assisted living is for older adults who are mostly independent but require help with what is known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and include things like dressing, bathing and other personal care activities.  In some cases, people move into an assisted living community knowing that while they do not now need assistance with such tasks, they may need help in the near future.

Assisted living also makes sense for seniors who are looking for more companionship and love the security of knowing they are not alone.  As many senior living communities such as MorningStar of Pasadena have an emergency call system in each suite, you can rest easy knowing help is just minutes away.   Another perk of MorningStar is we offer scheduled transportation so you will never have to worry about getting to your doctor appointments and other important errands.

Moreover, while MorningStar’s suites vary in size and number of bedrooms, all our suites are smartly designed to make the most of the space they offer with high ceilings and lots of natural light.  Features include high end finishes, a kitchenette, individually controlled heating and cooling, and many have a balcony.  In addition, residents often tell us what a relief it was to give up their large family homes that were hard to keep clean as well as all of the maintenance required.  Residents also enjoy weekly housekeeping and delicious meals they no longer need to cook.

MorningStar offers the kind of senior living families can trust.  Along with assisted living in Pasadena, CA, we provide independent living for active seniors and memory care for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) and trial stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest independent and assisted living Pasadena, CA offers. Older Adults Are Particularly Vulnerable to Extreme Heat

August 09, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Most areas in the United States have seen summers getting hotter over the last several years. Several days in a row of extreme heat can especially take a toll on seniors. Experts say if you are an older adult and/or someone on medications and have chronic heart, lung or kidney problems, it can make it even harder for your body to handle higher temperatures.

While hotter temperatures are difficult for all of us, studies find seniors do not adjust as well to heat and humidity as they did when they were younger. The National Institute on Aging says it is important for those at risk to take precautions and get relief quickly when you do feel overheated.

Along with a slower response to temperature changes, prescription medication like high blood pressure and heart medications; diuretics and sedatives make it harder for the body to cool. In addition, many seniors may be on several medications that only compound the problem.

Other issues interfering with seniors ability to handle the heat is obesity or being overweight or underweight as well as normal changes in aging skin. Not drinking enough fluids can lead to dehydration and increase your risk of heat-related illness. Water, fruit juices and drinks with electrolytes are good choices but avoid caffeinated products and alcohol.

If you live in a place without air conditioning, it is important to keep the space as cool as possible. Limit the use of the oven and keep blinds and drapes shut during the hottest part of the day. Open windows at night to bring in cooler air. If possible, spend part of your day in a cool spot such as an indoor mall, cooling center or library where there is air conditioning. If you need transportation, don’t stand outside waiting for a bus, ask a relative or friend for a ride or call a ride service.

The NIA says signs of heat-related illness include headache, confusion and dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, they advise going to the doctor or an emergency room to find out if you need treatment.

For exceptional assisted living in Houston, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at River Oaks. Our all-inclusive assisted living community offers a range of luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities, while providing all the warmth and welcoming comforts of home. Every private suite is well designed to maximize space and options include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood offers specialized care to those with memory impairment. Please contact us for more information and ask us about our Move-in Specials.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Is it Time to Consider an Assisted Living Community?

July 22, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

If you have become responsible for more and more of the caregiving duties of an elderly parent or another loved one, it may be time to consider a change.  Today’s senior living options include assisted living that provides daily help with personal care, and actually helps residents regain their sense of independence.  Also, once your loved one is getting the proper care they need, it allows you to get back to just enjoying the time you spend together.  Moreover, assisted living communities like MorningStar of Pasadena provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.

Our priority is to ensure your loved one gets the care they need.  This starts with a thorough evaluation of their medical and personal history, followed by a care plan approved by the resident and their family.  MorningStar’s services also help our families by providing transportation to doctor appointments as well as offer supportive services from third-party providers including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.  Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.  While this is not a substitute for the time your loved one spends with family, you may find your mom or dad is not always available to take your call as they are busy having fun with other residents and staff.

Our services also include providing housekeeping to help ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we see to it your loved one gets the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our lovely dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also help with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Please contact us for more information regarding MorningStar’s assisted living in Pasadena, CA.  Our beautiful community offers 144 suites for independent living, assisted living and memory care in a variety of floor plans and configurations. We also offer short-term stays ideal for those recovering from an illness or surgery or when a senior’s regular caregiver is on vacation.

As the Population Ages, Assisted Living Communities Address Care Needs

June 28, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

According to the America’s Health Rankings statistics, there were nearly 58 million adults ages 65 years and older, accounting for approximately 17.3% of the nation’s population as of 2022. An aging population means the number of seniors who require help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) will continue to grow as will the necessity for assisted living communities to address those needs.

The National Center for Assisted Living, a non-profit organization representing assisted living facilities across the country, explains, “Assisted living is part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

So how do you decide the best fit for yourself or a loved one when it comes to an assisted living community? Experts say begin by researching who regulates assisted living in your state and the type of regulations in place. Then begin looking at individual homes. The most important thing is to ensure the home provides the level of care you or your loved one needs now and will need over the next several years as you don’t want to have to make another move in a couple of years.

Affordability is another consideration. Consulting with an elder care attorney can be helpful in exploring creative ways to pay for assisted living. Also, you will want a location convenient for family and friends, and for getting to doctor’s appointments, shopping and more.

Finally, consider the amenities and activities. Does the community have inviting common areas for visitors?  What type of onsite amenities would you desire?  A salon, theater or chapel? Are the activities or hobbies you enjoy such as crafting or bridge available?

At MorningStar at River Oaks, we offer assisted living along with memory care.  As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Aging in Place - Factors to Consider

June 24, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

To safely age in place, seniors need to be somewhere that supports their independence, health, and security whether it is their own home or a senior community designed to meet their needs. The decision on where and how a person lives depends on a variety of factors including any physical conditions limiting their mobility. Another thing affecting a person’s well-being is dealing with a disease such as Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.

It is beneficial to evaluate your current home to see if it will work for you in the future; or would your needs be better served somewhere like an assisted living community? If you have mobility issues and your present living situation requires modifications to make it safe, keep in mind those changes can be expensive as well as affect the value of the home when you do sell. Problem areas include stairs, narrow doorways and poorly lit areas that increase the risk of a dangerous fall.

Additionally, if you live alone, how far away are family members or friends you can count on if you need help. Are you comfortable with an in-home service to assist you with tasks that are difficult to do on your own such as bathing or preparing food?

Other important considerations of aging in place include the upkeep of a home. Are you responsible for the maintenance inside and out? Also, do you still drive, and how far away is shopping and your medical care?

If you do have chronic health conditions, it makes sense to plan for changing needs. In some cases, a person may choose to move into an assisted living community even if they currently do not need help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). This way they are already familiar with the residents and staff and have peace of mind knowing help will be there when they need it. For assisted living in Houston, we encourage you to learn more about MorningStar at River Oaks, located in the Upper Kirby district.

MorningStar at River Oaks is designed from the ground up to accommodate residents in beautiful surroundings. Services include help with the ADLs; all-day, restaurant-style dining; resort-style amenities; wellness programs, activities and built-in companionship. Finding an Assisted Living Community for a Parent

June 12, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

If you have started searching for assisted living for a parent, you know it can be overwhelming.  You are probably looking for a place that fits their budget, care needs, and lifestyle preferences.  Moreover, you know it is not a decision to make lightly as you will not want to move mom or dad again after just a few months.  That is why the experts suggest that if the circumstances allow that you take your time.

The Internet has several checklists and suggestions on what to look for when searching for assisted living communities including questions to ask when talking to the staff.  One thing everyone agrees on is that it is a good idea to take a tour of the community.

Questions you will want to ask include suite sizes and configurations, pricing information and availability.  If you plan to have both of your parents move in, ask if they can share a suite.  Also, if applicable, find out if the community supports Companion Living (where two people of the same sex share a suite).

You will also want to learn more about the care services your loved one will receive. How is the level of care determined?  Will they have access to care 24/7?  How close is the community to medical care facilities and how are medical emergencies handled? Are nurses available and if so, how often?  What is the staff-to-resident ratio and do the staff receive special training?  Do any of the caregivers have CPR training?

In addition, ask about programs and activities available to residents.  If possible, get a calendar of events to review later.  Also, ask about the dining experience.  Are meals offered all day?  Is the dining room full service?  Can a resident have meals delivered to their suite?  If your parents have diet restrictions find out if they can be accommodated.

Location is another thing to consider as you will want a community that is convenient for family and friends that will want to visit.  Be sure to ask if you will be allowed to visit at any time or if there is a set schedule when residents can receive visitors.

At MorningStar at River Oaks, we look forward to answering all your questions.  Our dedicated team works hard to give our residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community second to none.  Our beautiful home offers assisted living in Houston along with a wide range of luxury amenities, wellness programs and care services.

May 17, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Along with our compassionate care services and resort-style amenities, residents have a choice of well-designed floorplans that are sure to meet a variety of preferences and needs.  Within our assisted living suites, we offer floorplans that include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations that provide residents privacy, comfort, and security.  You will find our suites have high-end finishes, kitchenettes with refrigerator and microwave, handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  All that is missing to make it feel like home are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind a beloved family member as we are pet friendly!

Choosing an Assisted Living Community

April 19, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

For anyone considering a move to assisted living, choosing the right community is a big decision for families as getting it wrong may mean another move within a couple of months. To help, senior living experts say the first thing to do is to think about the level of care you or a loved one needs to improve quality of life.

After you have a good idea of what your needs are, now factor in things like location and affordability. If mom or dad needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) focus only on senior communities offering assisted living. If you want the home to be a convenient drive for easy visiting, concentrate on those communities. If mom or dad no longer drives, look for a community offering transportation for doctor appointments or errands; or if they plan to bring a car, does it offer parking? Does the home offer 24/7 care, medication management and access to licensed nurses?

Obviously, affordability is an important consideration, but senior living advocates warn don’t be initially shocked at the price. Rather think about all the living costs such as property taxes, maintenance, utility bills and meals included in the home’s monthly fees. For a better understanding of mom or dad’s assets, it may be worth your while to consult an expert in elder financial consulting. They can explore various options such as eligibility for Veterans’ benefits, what your parent’s long-term care insurance may cover, and the advantages of leveraging real estate assets and life insurance, tax benefits and more.

Other things to consider include the physical characteristics of the assisted living community. Does it offer a floor plan that works for you? Do you want amenities such as a fitness center, hair salon, outdoor patio, restaurant-style dining, theater, Wi-Fi, etc.?

For luxury assisted living in Houston, we encourage you to learn more MorningStar at River Oaks. MorningStar’s assisted living lets seniors comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, resort-style amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. Aging Brings Many Changes Including in the Brain

April 17, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

It is no secret that aging brings with it changes many of us experience including not being as sharp as we were when younger. Many seniors say they find it more difficult to multitask, have trouble recalling names and finding the right word. Some complain about a decline in their ability to concentrate, absorb, process, and remember new information.

On the positive side, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) says studies have found various strengths of seniors such as having a wider vocabulary and a greater depth of understanding of the meaning of words than younger adults. Moreover, most are capable of learning new skills (it may take longer), and forming new memories. Another advantage older adults have over their younger counterparts is a wealth of life experience and accumulated knowledge.

However, researchers are trying to figure out why some seniors stay cognitively healthy longer than others, and if our lifestyle habits protect our brains as we age. For now evidence shows certain parts of our brains do shrink as we age, especially those areas associated with learning; and parts of our brain may not communicate with one another as well as when we were younger. In addition, blood flow may decrease, while inflammation increases, and causes problems.

We do know some people live well into their 80s, 90s and beyond with sharp cognitive skills, and defy the widely held view of seniors’ declining abilities. NIA-supported researchers call these lucky few “super agers,” and define them as “people age 80 years and older who have performance on memory tests comparable to people two to three decades younger.” While we are not sure why super agers retain such strong cognitive skills, scientists say it could be they started out with a larger, more robust brain.

If you are looking for assisted living, Houston’s MorningStar at River Oaks may be your answer. We offer seniors a safe place to socialize and make new friends as well as activities and wellness programs to enjoy life to the fullest. We are located in the vibrant Upper Kirby district, and convenient to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services. Cost Considerations When Choosing an Assisted Living Community

April 15, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Experts advise families to do their homework before moving mom or dad into an assisted living community as the more you know about retirement communities, it helps avoid sticker shock as well as an unhappy parent. The recommendation is to tour at least two potential communities in order to make an informed comparison.

Prices for assisted living typically are determined by the amount of senior care services the person requires. Many offer a tiered system of care to allow residents to safely age in place as health conditions change so remember to ask about how often care plans are evaluated. Other reasons costs can vary include room type, i.e. selecting a smaller or larger floor plan; as well as suite location, a scenic view or balcony.

Be sure to ask what services and activities are included in the basic cost of the community. You will want to know about upfront deposits, community and move-in fees. Additionally, ask about the procedure for moving out and what type of notice you need to give.

Han Hwang, executive VP of partner sales and success for Caring.com, an online resource for those caring for aging parents, spouses and other loved ones, says “it’s really important to know exactly what you’re getting and to do an apples-to-apples comparison” when choosing an assisted living community. Often monthly costs include a fee for room and board along with the level of care, medication management and any other ancillary services. To help you stay within budget, Hwang says to anticipate services you may need over the next 12 to 24 months.

Assisted Living Provides Support With Daily Activities and Much More

April 12, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

When asked, many seniors say they would prefer to age in place in their own home, but at some point, a family may have to consider if there isn’t a better, safer option for them. Assisted living communities are designed for people who are largely independent but require support with daily activities. They offer residents many benefits such as peace of mind knowing help is there whenever they need it, access to licensed nurses, medication management and transportation to doctor’s appointments.

The range of activities is typically broad with something to appeal to everyone. Whether you are a movie buff who loves classic films, a trivia expert or a budding artist who would love the chance to explore their creative side, assisted living makes it easy to stay involved. Many communities also have fitness centers and exercise classes tailored to seniors as well as large outdoor areas perfect for taking a stroll or sitting out on the patio with friends.

Safety and security are important to seniors and living in an assisted living community gives you both. Communities are designed to meet the needs of residents dealing with mobility issues, and offer ramps, flat thresholds, wide corridors and hallway hand railings. Handicap accessible bathrooms are another benefit of assisted living.

Studies show seniors who are isolated and lack socialization are at risk for dementia, and community living offers a vibrant lifestyle without much effort. Other perks include healthy, balanced meals seniors no longer need to cook.

Remember your parents have worked hard all their lives to provide for others and it is time to think about their happiness and well-being. At MorningStar at River Oaks, we offer seniors the finest assisted living in Houston to allow them to live life to the fullest. Along with well-designed suites, we offer an array of luxury amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities.

In addition, those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood provides experienced, compassionate care for our most tender residents. Please visit our website to learn more about our community, and contact us to ask about availability and pricing.

Are Personality Traits a Factor in Cognitive Decline in Later Life?

February 16, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published an interesting article from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal study of older Chicago-area adults that began in 1997. The intent of the survey was to determine if personalities affect cognitive decline, and included nearly 2,000 people.

The study focused on examining the role of three key personality traits – conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism – to see if they are a factor in cognitive decline in later life. Researchers say evidence suggests being more conscientious and extroverted may keep mild cognitive impairment at bay longer. Participants who exhibited higher levels of neuroticism increased their chances of cognitive decline.

The lead author of the study, Tomiko Yoneda, a psychology postdoctoral student at the University of Victoria in Canada, explains, “Personality traits reflect relatively enduring patterns of thinking and behaving, which may cumulatively affect engagement in healthy and unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns across the lifespan.” Extroverted, socially engaged people appeared to have an additional year of dementia-free living; and those who scored high on conscientiousness might have two more years without cognitive issues as compared with those who scored low in conscientiousness.

While other studies back up these results, scientists agree further studies will be needed. For example, Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic in the Center for Brain Health at Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine, cautions, while “specific traits may increase risk due to a lifetime of behaviors that predispose a person to developing cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease, there may be more of a direct biological role related to early disease pathology.”

Which Assisted Living Community is the Best Fit for You?

February 05, 2024 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

A recent US News & World Report article discusses how to determine which assisted living community would be the best fit for you or a loved one. They explain that while there may be similarities between communities, upon closer scrutiny, each one will most likely have its own strengths and weaknesses. It is also a good idea to take into account things like personal preferences and location; and you may find it helpful to take a look at the checklist provided in the article.

To begin narrowing down the various communities, visit their websites to get answers to commonly asked questions. From there you can call to inquire about availability and pricing, and if the place sounds good, go ahead and book an in-person tour. While at the community, make the effort to speak to as many people as possible. Try to be there during an activity to see how engaged residents are, and join the group for lunch if you have the opportunity.

Furthermore, this is a good time to discuss the range of senior care options to determine if they can provide the level of care you need. Ask about policies regarding joining the community and what happens if it doesn’t work out. If there is a daily calendar of activities and events, ask for a copy. You will also want to know if they provide transportation for doctor’s appointments and other errands. If you do eat a meal, what did you think of the quality? Another thing to pay attention to is the cleanliness and smell of the community.

As mentioned earlier, location is important. Is the community convenient for your family and friends and close to your doctors and other personal services? When visitors do come, is there adequate parking? Is there a relaxing spot to sit outside when the weather is nice?

Now consider personal preferences. Does the size of the community matter to you? How does the list of amenities stack up to things you are interested in doing? For example, is an onsite salon important or do you enjoy spending time outdoors?  Would you like to attend services at an onsite chapel?

At MorningStar at River Oaks, we offer senior living in Houston’s desirable Upper Kirby District. Assisted living suites are available in a variety of contemporary floor plans featuring high end finishes, in-suite washer/dryer, handicap-accessible bathroom and emergency call system. We provide residents comprehensive care services along with luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities to enhance quality of life. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, we offer compassionate, all-inclusive care in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. Please contact us for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Cost of Assisted Living

December 11, 2023 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

Experts advise families to do a lot of research before moving mom or dad into an assisted living community as it will help avoid sticker shock as well as an unhappy parent.

Other reasons costs can vary include room type, i.e. selecting a studio or one- or two-bedroom floorplan; as well as suite location, a scenic view or balcony.

Be sure to ask what services and activities are included in the basic cost of the community. You will want to know about upfront deposits, community fees and move-in fees.

MorningStar at River Oaks’ contemporary senior living community in Houston’s Upper Kirby district offers 85 assisted living suites in a selection of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. To add to your comfort and convenience, amenities include a full salon, bistro, scheduled transportation, clubroom, fitness center and more. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides 27 memory care suites. Contact us to ask about availability and our Move-in Specials.
