The Link Between Hearing Loss and Cognitive Impairment

October 09, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Living

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

Some Medications Can Increase Your Risk of a Fall

October 09, 2023 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports millions of older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 36,000 deaths. Of those falls, 3 million seniors are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk.

The first step is to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking one of these medications, as medications are a common reason for falls. Furthermore, experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage.

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition, be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. Lastly check your home for trip hazards (keep clutter out of hallways and stairways) and install grab bars and better lighting where needed.

Study Shows 8,200 Steps per Day is a Good Goal

October 06, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

Over the last several years, reports on the “optimal” number of steps we should take each day seem to vary. Early-on it was all about getting 10,000 steps but the Medical News Today’s website explains the idea of 10,000 steps was actually conceived in the 1960s as a marketing tool and was not based on any actual medical research.

A study from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, decided to take a “fresh look at how many steps a person should take each day — and what kind of steps are most beneficial — to promote good health.” The data was obtained with fitness trackers and the information led researchers to suggest a goal of 8,200 steps a day significantly lowers a person’s risk of chronic disease.

Researchers report results show an association between walking 8,200 steps and a reduced risk of chronic conditions, including:

  • obesity

  • sleep apnea

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • major depressive disorder (MDD)

  • diabetes

  • hypertension

In addition, they found even more steps a day could reduce the risk even more for some of these diseases. However, Dr. Evan L. Brittain, associate professor of medicine at Vanderbilt, explained, in the case of “diabetes and hypertension, we observed a plateau at around 8–9000 steps per day, above which there wasn’t any obvious benefit.” He also reminded people there is no reason to not get in more steps a day as they can be beneficial for other health conditions.

As You Age, Social Activities are Important to Your Health and Happiness

October 02, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

The National Institute on Aging explains that while eating healthy and exercising is important for seniors, socializing and participating in activities you enjoy can be just as beneficial. Being lonely or feeling isolated is not good for our health and well-being; and can lead to depression or anxiety, neither of which is good for our health.

Taking part in social activities can increase a person’s sense of purpose and give more meaning to their life. Whether it is starting a new hobby, renewing an old interest, or making the effort to spend more time with family or friends, being social and having an active lifestyle can benefit the mind, body and spirit.

The NIA reports on various studies that find seniors who participate in hobbies and other social activities may lower their risk for developing some health problems “including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.” A longer lifespan is linked to those who say they are satisfied with life; and other studies show staying physically active and having purpose appears to keep seniors happier and less depressed.

Experts say when seniors are happier; they are more resilient and better able to cope with life’s various challenges. More research suggests seniors who routinely participate in physical or mental activities may have fewer memory problems; while other data finds creative activities such as dancing or listening to music may help with memory problems or dementia.

At MorningStar Senior Living of Kirkland, residents find opportunities for new friendships, predictable budgeting, wellness programs, and the chance to relax in beautiful surroundings. We have someone for everyone and our calendar includes activities to mentally, physically, socially and spiritually stimulate and engage. Safety Tips for Older Drivers

September 29, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others.  The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion.  Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease.  They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.

A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision.  Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars.  Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done.  Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.

Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy.  It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good.  Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills.  You may need to re-evaluate your driving every few months, especially if you find yourself having incidents of accidents that almost happened.

Some safe driving tips for seniors:

Planning before you leave:

  • Plan to drive on streets you know.

  • Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.

  • Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.

  • Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.

  • Don’t drive when you are stressed or tired.

While you are driving:

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Stay off the cell phone.

  • Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.

  • Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.

  • Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)

  • Use your rear window defroster to always keep the back window clear.

  • Always keep your headlights on.

Exercise can Improve Bone Health

September 27, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Living

The Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation reports approximately 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis, and 44 million have low bone density, meaning they are at risk of developing the condition. One in two females and up to one in four males will be affected by a broken bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. Medication, calcium, and vitamin D and K can help strengthen bones.

In addition, if you are diagnosed with osteoporosis or low bone mass, an important lifestyle habit is to introduce weight-bearing exercises into your daily routine. The Harvard Medical School publication explains even if you have already had a fracture you should be staying active.* They explain the risk of another fracture is very high, so you want to do everything you can to lessen the chances of that happening by increasing your bone density.

Weight-bearing exercises can reduce the risk of a fall as well as reduce the risk of fracturing a bone if you do fall. The publication cites an analysis reported on by the British Medical Association’s BMJ, which found that programs of balance, strength, and resistance training reduced the odds of falls resulting in fractures by more than 60%.

Harvard Medical School says the four components of an exercise program for osteoporosis should include:

  • Weight-bearing exercises that force your body to work against gravity. These include walking, climbing stairs, playing tennis, and dancing. (Higher-impact activities strengthen bone more than lower-impact exercises, but only do what your fitness level allows).

  • Muscle-strengthening exercises using weights or your body’s own resistance to work against gravity. This includes lifting free weights, using a weight machine, working with resistance bands, and lifting your own body weight. Do it at least twice a week.

  • Balance exercises can improve your ability to hold yourself upright and help prevent falls. Examples of these types of balance exercises are tai chi and yoga. Again try to do these at least twice a week.

  • Flexibility exercises are useful to ensure muscles stay limber, and joints mobile.  Stretching and yoga are good exercises. Experts recommend stretching after every workout for five to 10 minutes.

A physical therapist or certified fitness trainer can help ensure you are doing your weight-bearing exercises safely. Experts say start slowly and build from there, and remember to be gentle in regards to your condition.

Please consult with your doctor before beginning any new exercise

Your Risk of Getting Shingles Increases With Age

September 27, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Living

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk of getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

Your Brain Changes as You Age

September 27, 2023 by MStar Living in Retirement Communities

It is no secret that aging brings with it changes many of us experience including not being as sharp as we were when younger. Many seniors say they find it more difficult to multitask, have trouble recalling names and finding the right word. Some complain about a decline in their ability to concentrate, absorb, process, and remember new information.

On the positive side, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) says studies have found various strengths of seniors such as having a wider vocabulary and a greater depth of understanding of the meaning of words than younger adults. Moreover, most are capable of learning new skills (it may take longer), and forming new memories. Another advantage older adults have over their younger counterparts is a wealth of life experience and accumulated knowledge.

However, researchers are trying to figure out why some seniors stay cognitively healthy longer than others, and if our lifestyle habits protect our brains as we age. For now evidence shows certain parts of our brains do shrink as we age, especially those areas associated with learning; and parts of our brain may not communicate with one another as well as when we were younger. In addition, blood flow may decrease, while inflammation increases, and causes problems.

We do know some people live well into their 80s, 90s and beyond with sharp cognitive skills, and defy the widely held view of seniors’ declining abilities. NIA-supported researchers call these lucky few “super agers,” and define them as “people aged 80 years and older who have performance on memory tests comparable to people two to three decades younger.” While we are not sure why super agers retain such strong cognitive skills, scientists say it could be they started out with a larger, more robust brain.

If you are looking at retirement communities in Hillsboro, OR, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, a true destination for successful aging.  We offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting.  Our beautiful home has 141 stylish apartments in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need.  Please see our website for more information about MorningStar of Hillsboro.

Now Is the Time To Try Something New

September 25, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

For many, retirement means an end to a long career and a busier lifestyle. As relaxing as that sounds, research shows it is important for people to continue to feel actively engaged regardless of their age. One interesting and fun way to do it is with a hobby as they are a good way to keep our brains sharp, relieve stress and anxiety, and lessen obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

One example of an all-around hobby is gardening. Not only does the person benefit from their labor in the form of flowers, fruits or vegetables, experts say gardening offers physical and mental benefits. These include reducing stress, giving the person a sense of achievement, getting out into fresh air and staying fit. If you worry about the physical work involved in gardening, there are tools and methods designed to make it easier. Raised beds eliminate the need for bending and kneeling on the ground as does vertical gardening and pot gardening that keeps things at arms’ reach.

Another hobby beneficial for seniors is playing a musical instrument. For instance, when playing the piano, the hands and brain must coordinate. The bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain and stimulate a whole range of brain functions that provide numerous benefits. If you aren’t musical, consider knitting as it offers the same two-sided movements along with the satisfaction of creating a baby blanket for a little one or a pair of socks for a homeless shelter.

Working on jigsaw puzzles, coloring, birdwatching and photography are all calming, brain stimulating, fun activities. Experts say many hobbies do not require commitment, and if at first you don’t find something to keep your interest, give another one a try.

If you are looking for outstanding senior housing in Kirkland, WA, MorningStar may be your answer. Could a Parent or Another Loved One Benefit From Assisted Living?

September 20, 2023 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

If you have become responsible for more and more of the caregiving duties of an elderly parent or another loved one, it may be time to consider a change.  Today’s senior living options include assisted living that provides daily help with personal care, and actually helps residents regain their sense of independence.  Also, once your loved one is getting the proper care they need, it allows you to get back to just enjoying the time you spend together.  Moreover, assisted living communities like MorningStar at River Oaks provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.

Our priority is to ensure your loved one gets the care they need.  This starts with a thorough evaluation of their medical and personal history, followed by a care plan approved by the resident and their family.  MorningStar’s services also help our families by providing transportation to doctor appointments as well as offer supportive services from third-party providers including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.  Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.  While this is not a substitute for the time your loved one spends with family, you may find your mom or dad is not always available to take your call as they are busy having fun with other residents and staff.

Our services also include providing housekeeping to help ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we see to it your loved one gets the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our lovely dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also offer assistance with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Please contact us for more information regarding luxury assisted living in Houston.  Our beautiful community offers 112 assisted living and memory care suites in a variety of floor plans and configurations that range from 400 to 1090 square feet. Walking is a Good Alternative to Running for Older Adults

September 20, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

It is not just an activity that helps you get from point A to point B. Walking represents one of the most effective activities that enhance both mental and physical health regardless of age. Many historically renowned figures such as Henry Thoreau, Thomas Jefferson, and William Wadsworth considered walking to be one of life’s most therapeutic activities. For many seniors, walking is the most accessible physical activity, which is why walking is a good alternative to running.

Running does a better job of working out the body, but it can cause joint and muscle pain that many seniors cannot endure as they grow older. Walking is much more gentle on vulnerable parts of the body, such as hips, knees, and ankles. The exercise requires less exertion, while at the same time giving the heart enough of a workout to encourage better blood circulation. At the MorningStar senior housing community in Kirkland, Washington, walking is the most popular physical activity for our residents.

Walking is easy enough for seniors covering all levels of fitness. According to Dr. Melina B Jampolis, the ideal walking exercise covers 30 minutes a day at least five times a week. Whether you walk alone or join a hiking club located in the greater Seattle metro area, walking delivers several benefits that make it the most effective strategy to maintain a healthy lifestyle well into your golden years.

Enhance Heart Health

Lowering your blood pressure improves heart health. Research indicates that for every 1,000 steps taken each day, you can lower your systolic blood pressure by .45 points. With 10,000 daily steps becoming the target goal for many healthcare experts, you can reduce your systolic blood pressure by 4.5 points in just one day. One of the most notable walking studies comes from The New England Journal of Medicine. The healthcare industry publication discovered that walking generates enough physical activity to lower the risk of a cardiovascular event by at least 30 percent. Just 500 additional steps taken each day can decrease the risk of contracting heart disease by almost 15 percent.

Mitigate Joint and Muscle Pain

We already mentioned why walking goes easier on the joints and muscles than running. Did you know that walking improves your mobility by increasing blood flow to both joints and muscles? Research demonstrates that walking just 10 minutes a day, which adds up to around an hour per week, can prevent the development of debilitating diseases such as arthritis. The American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2019 published a research study that followed 1,564 older adults who experienced joint pain in the lower body. Participants in the research study that walked for just an hour a week had a better chance of remaining joint pain-free four years later.

Boost Mood

“I need to clear my head. I’m going on a walk.”

How many times have you heard the statement or even uttered it yourself? Although a chocolate square or a glass of red wine can take the edge off a stressful day, going for a walk is a zero-calorie generating strategy that delivers positively impactful mental health benefits. Research shows that only 10 minutes of walking can improve your mental health. Learn More About Strokes

September 18, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Living

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that every 40 seconds a person has a stroke and every 3 minutes and 14 seconds someone dies from one.  While that is alarming, the CDC says that almost 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.

Did you know that one of the leading causes of strokes is high blood pressure, also called hypertension, and is the most prevalent health condition facing Americans? Statistics show nearly half (48%) of US adults have hypertension, and as people age, their blood pressure goes up.  Experts believe about 70% of people 65 years and older have hypertension and should take steps to reduce it.  If you fall into that age group or are at risk for HBP, start by regularly monitoring your blood pressure.  If high, work with your doctor to find ways to lower it including getting more exercise and eating a healthy diet.

Another way to help prevent strokes is to quit smoking.  Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream and forces the heart to work harder, which in turn, increases the likelihood of blood clots.  Also, if you are diabetic, you need to manage the disease.  The American Diabetes Association reports that diabetics are two to four times more likely to have a stroke than someone without the disease.

Exercise is another way to lower your risk.  Doctors say 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week, like a brisk walk, yoga or dancing are beneficial.  Moreover, if you are overweight, try to lose weight as obesity puts you at risk for any number of health issues including stroke.  And don’t forget to get your cholesterol checked.  The AHA recommends everyone 20 years of age and over should have it done at least every 5 years.   Check with your healthcare provider regarding other risks for stroke.

SENIOR HOUSING AT MORNINGSTAR OF KIRKLAND

September 18, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

Seniors require personal care that differs from the personal care needs of other family members. This makes it difficult to categorize your senior loved one’s personal care needs into a one-size-fits-all strategy. When the time comes to consider a move from an independent lifestyle to an assisted living lifestyle, how do you make the right decision that benefits your loved one while not sacrificing privacy?

The answer lies in choosing senior housing at MorningStar of Kirkland, Washington.

The Seattle metro area boasts an impressive selection of senior living communities. However, MorningStar of Kirkland is the only senior housing community in Kirkland and beyond that offers a place for a senior loved one who one day might need to transition from an independent lifestyle to a lifestyle that consists of more assisted living services. At MorningStar of Kirkland, we offer three distinct lifestyle options, which include independent, assisted living, and memory care. Your senior loved one can start in the independent living program, and when the time comes, transition into a more assisted living arrangement to meet every need.

4 Factors to Consider for Senior Housing in Kirkland

If you are searching for the right home for a senior loved one, you should consider four factors that define the best senior housing communities in Kirkland, WA.

Size

Senior housing communities define size by the number of beds offered. Larger senior housing communities in Kirkland tend to offer more services and amenities because of their ability to generate higher revenue. Although you should ask about how many beds a facility has to offer, you also should determine what is the staff-to-resident ratio. Senior housing communities that have low staff-to-resident ratios tend to provide higher quality of care.

Location

Location matters when searching for a senior care facility because you want to be as close as possible to your senior loved one. Judging location by the number of miles is one thing to consider, but you also should consider ease of access. Kirkland, Washington is conveniently located in the heart of the Seattle suburbs, with several major transportation options available to make the drive from and to your home an easy one to make.

Activities

An active lifestyle represents one of, if not the most important factors that determine the quality of life for a senior living in an assisted living facility in Kirkland. Active seniors typically report fewer mental and physical health issues, which means finding senior housing with a comprehensive activities calendar should be at the top of your search list. Examples of mentally stimulating activities include board games like chess and classes for art and music, while physically stimulating activities consist of yoga and Tai Chi.

Services and Amenities

Although the number of services and amenities matter when searching for senior housing in Kirkland, Washington, the quality of the services and amenities should be a factor as well. At MorningStar-Kirkland, we recruit the most experienced senior care professionals that specialize in providing certain services and amenities. You can expect your senior loved one to be taken care of by a professional who knows how to optimize our services and amenities.

With three lifestyle options available, your senior loved one can call MorningStar of Kirkland home for the rest of his or her life. Discover more about our senior housing county in Kirkland, Washington by scheduling a tour today.

The Difference Between Independent Living and Assisted Living

September 18, 2023 by MStar Living in Independent Living

Often families are confused with the terms “independent living” and “assisted living” and are not sure which one is best suited for their needs. To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe senior living communities that are designed specifically for seniors 55 and older who want to and can live without any help. Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy but require assistance in their daily lives.

Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle. While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, day trips and meals. Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with routine chores that need to be done when owning a home.

At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour supervision. Generally a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family. Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

If you are looking for the best independent or assisted living in Pasadena, CA, MorningStar is it. We offer privacy, comfort, and security, and a staff that works hard to meet the needs of our remarkable residents. Make the Most of Your Next Visit to the Doctor

September 15, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Have you had the experience of walking to your car after a doctor’s visit and a question pops into your mind you wished you had asked the doctor? You are not alone. In fact, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the U.S. Dept. of Human Health & Services, reminds all of us about the benefit of preparing questions and accurate information ahead of time to provide to your physician. They say it not only improves your care, but builds trust between you and your healthcare provider, which can lead to better results.

For help on questions to ask to facilitate a more fruitful visit to your doctor and efficiently use your precious time (studies show doctors spend between 13 to 24 minutes with each patient), the AHRQ offers a series of questionnaires related to your visit. Remember typically you have a reason for the visit such as: a well visit, looking for answers for a specific medical problem, returning to discuss treatment, or getting test results. Prepare for your appointment by bringing your prescription medications as well as over-the-counter drugs you use including vitamins and dietary or herbal supplements.

When discussing a possible medical procedure, AHRQ says questions should include: why do I need this procedure; how do I prepare; when will I get the results; and how will I feel afterward? If surgery is recommended, ask if there are alternative treatments available that are just as effective; possible complications; and recovery period. AHRQ says if you are given a new medication, ask how the new drug will interact with other drugs you are taking, how long you will be on it, and common side effects. Before you leave your appointment, make sure you understand your instructions.

Getting the Appropriate Care for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

September 15, 2023 by MStar Living in memory care

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, a person’s needs change and it is important to recognize and address those changes with appropriate care. Along with meeting basic needs, experts say care providers should treat the whole person by creating an environment that allows them to feel independent and safe. The Alzheimer’s Association says determining the best care options can be tough and offers some advice on how to ensure the person has the services, programs, and caregivers in place for the best possible quality of life.

The first step to any decision regarding care is to honestly evaluate your loved one’s needs. Also, to whatever degree possible, it is recommended you include them in any decisions. Another thing to remember is during the early stages of the disease the person may be able to live independently but in the middle stages, 24-hour supervision is needed. Additionally, around-the-clock care is much more demanding in the later and end stages.

Primary points to consider include safety, especially in terms of unsupervised cooking, or if the person has a tenacity to wander or needs help with medications. Does the person have medical conditions that need monitoring such as diabetes or a mobility issue? Other problems that may demand more professional care include a person becoming aggressive or needing help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). Finally, consider if the person would benefit from more social interactions and activities.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar of Pasadena offers care to those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases.  The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages their independence while keeping them safe.  Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. 3 Teas My Elderly Loved One Can Enjoy

September 15, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires a dedicated commitment at any age, but it is especially important for older adults to prevent the development of diseases and illnesses. Exercise plays a vital role in determining health, as both aerobic and anaerobic exercise routines enhance the strength of mental and physical health, Seniors benefit from heart-healthy exercises such as walking and cycling, as well as joint and muscle-building weightlifting routines. Although exercise plays an important role in determining health, it is not as effective unless you integrate a nutritional diet into your daily routine.

When you think of a nutritional diet, the first thing that pops into your mind probably is incorporating vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables into each meal. Yes, fruits and vegetables deliver essential vitamins and minerals, but a certain beverage also contributes to following a balanced,  nutritional diet. We are talking about tea, but not just any type of tea.

At our senior housing community in Kirkland, Washington, we emphasize the many health benefits delivered by consuming tea. This type of beverage helps relieve stress, while at the same time improving mood and memory. Those at a high risk of developing diabetes can benefit from consuming tea because of the presence of the antioxidant called polyphenol. Tea also lowers blood pressure by activating proteins located in the walls of the vessels that carry blood to and from the heart.

What Are the 3 Teas Seniors Should Consume?

Tea is not just a beverage enjoyed during the colder months of the year. You should incorporate tea into your senior loved one’s diet every day regardless of the season. The key is to incorporate at least one of the following three types of tea into your elderly loved one’s diet.

Green Tea

It is the most recognized type of tea, and the hype is accurate concerning the healing properties delivered by green tea over the past several hundred years. Research studies released demonstrate the healing power of green tea, from enhancing cognitive skills to slowing down the development of the growth of tumors that define a wide variety of cancers. Green tea also decreases cholesterol levels, prevents heart disease, and fights against tooth decay.

Ginger Tea

If your elderly loved one enjoys more flavorful beverages, then ginger tea might become the beverage of choice. Ginger tea can mitigate the symptoms of heartburn, which is a common medical condition that develops in older adults. It also is known for reducing cholesterol levels, as well as improving blood circulation. Enhanced blood circulation can reduce the likelihood of your senior loved one developing blood clots. Since ginger possesses blood thinning capabilities, make sure your elderly loved one consults with a physician before consuming ginger tea.

Chamomile Tea

As one of the least-known types of tea, chamomile tea provides older adults with a proven way to combat insomnia. This type of tea helps seniors relax, which is an important behavior to prevent the development of the stress and anxiety that often occurs while transitioning to a new living environment. Chamomile tea also is known to lower blood sugar, which is a key strategy to prevent the development of diabetes. Since chamomile tea has a sedative effect, it should be consumed towards the end of the day.MorningStar of Kirkland has a highly-rated team of dieticians and nutritionists on staff to help our residents make the right lifestyle choices. Yoga vs. Tai Chi for Seniors

September 13, 2023 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

Whether you reside in a senior housing facility in Kirkland, Washington, or live independently in a home or an apartment, exercise is one of the key components to helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Numerous studies indicate following an exercise regimen can help prevent the development of aging-related diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis. Exercise also benefits the heart, as well as enhances the circulation of blood throughout the body. You should experience an improvement in balance and coordination, as well as reap the benefits of a healthier mental state.

One of the many ways our MorningStar senior housing community in Kirkland helps residents maintain strong health is by offering several exercise options. The key is to participate in low-impact exercises that go easy on vulnerable joints and muscles. With that in mind, yoga and tai chi represent two of the most beneficial low-impact exercises for older adults. Both types of exercises achieve a balance between meeting the needs of both the mind and body. They both enhance balance, mobility, and coordination, as well as boost mental health.

However, subtle differences exist between the two types of low-impact exercises, which should help you determine which type of low-impact exercise is the right choice to meet your needs.

Yoga for Seniors

Originating in India centuries ago, yoga represents a spiritually-based type of exercise that involves regulated breathing and periods of focused meditation. Yoga consists of holding different physical postures to improve both balance and coordination. Contemporary yoga programs present a wide variety of styles and formats, which makes it easy for older adults to enroll in the right program. The regulated breathing and focused meditation components of yoga help seniors manage their mood, as well as prevent the development of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

Seniors should avoid faster styles of yoga like vinyasa and power flow, and instead, participate in yoga programs that emphasize the mental health benefits of the exercise.

Tai Chi for Seniors

Tai Chi developed from the spiritual roots formed by Taoism, which started in China as an internal style of martial arts. The exercise routine requires more physical exertion than what yoga requires. This means seniors living with a disease like osteoarthritis should receive a consultation before deciding whether to enroll in a Tai Chi program. Tai Chi combines regulated breathing with graceful movements to achieve full body harmony. Seniors have several Tai Chi styles to choose from, including the oldest type of exercise called Chen style that emphasizes teaching self-defense moves.

Seniors also can consider enrolling in a Tai Chi program that concentrates on the Sun, Yang, or Wu style of the exercise regimen.

The Bottom Line

Before you decide which low-impact exercise program to enroll in at our senior housing facility in Kirkland, WA, we recommend consulting with your doctor before making your decision. If cleared by your physician to participate in both exercises, the one that you choose comes down to whether you want the more spiritual experience offered by yoga or the more physically demanding experience delivered by Tai Chi.

At the MorningStar senior housing community located in Kirkland, Washington, we offer a wide variety of exercise programs that enhance the mental and physical health of our residents. This includes classes that teach the movements of yoga and Tai Chi. Set in a highly supportive environment surrounded by the natural splendor of Northwest Washington, MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care in Kirkland provides highly-rated assisted living and memory care services.
