The Facts About Parkinson’s Disease

We often come to think something is true if we hear it stated as if it is a fact. Doctors say this happens in medicine more frequently than we realize. One such disease with lots of misinformation surrounding it is Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder affecting predominantly dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. Symptoms develop slowly over years and may include tremors (mainly at rest); bradykinesia (slowness of movement); limb rigidity; and gait and balance problems. 

One common misconception regarding PD is it only affects a person’s movement. Doctors explain this is untrue as symptoms can also include: cognitive impairment or dementia, depression and anxiety, sleep dysfunction, pain, apathy, sexual dysfunction, and bowel incontinence. Another thing many people believe is levodopa, one of the most effective treatments for PD, is only effective for a certain amount of time. However, experts say it is not the drug that becomes less potent but the fact that the “key enzyme that converts levodopa to dopamine (aromatic acid decarboxylase or AADC) is predominantly found in the dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra, which are lost during progression of the disease.” 

People should know tremors are not always a symptom of PD, and that some people with PD never get them. In terms of the trajectory of the disease, it varies with individuals. Also, research suggests staying physically active can slow progression and reduce symptoms. 

Although the cause of the disease is not known nor is there a cure for it, there are treatments used to improve symptoms and allow people to have a good quality of life. While current therapies don’t slow or stop PD, researchers are working to identify biomarkers to enable earlier detection and hope to find better treatments.

The Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

While we always hear about omega-3 fatty acids and how they are good for us, just what are they? The experts explain omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fat also called “healthy fats.” Research suggests they play a role in protecting us from heart disease and dementia. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) omega-3s are “the primary polyunsaturated fats in brain cell membranes and have been popularized and successfully marketed as dietary supplements.” 

DHA, EPA and DPA omega-3 fatty acids are synthesized by marine organisms such as algae and phytoplankton. They are then consumed by fish, aquatic mammals and crustaceans where the acids are stored in body fat, liver and blubber. When we consume foods from the sea such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, liver of lean white fish and fish oils, we get the benefits of the omega-3s stored in their bodies.  

Another type of omega-3 is ALA derived from plant sources and is the most readily used by the body to create all other types of omega-3 fatty acids. ALAs are found in nuts and seeds like flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts as well as oils like canola and soybean. Experts say although ALA can create all forms of omega-3 fatty acids, “the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA is poor, so they recommend a dietary intake of a combination of foods rich in ALA, EPA, and DHA.

Along with reducing the risk for heart disease, The Medical News Today (MNT) reports other evidence-based benefits of omega-3s include exerting anti-inflammatory effects throughout the human body, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and improving tolerance to cancer treatments. A study also showed fish oil supplementations protected against major depressive disorders in person between the ages of 15 to 25.

It is Not Too Late to Get Your Annual Flu Shot

Medicare and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention remind everyone that even if they haven’t gotten an annual flu shot yet, it is not too late. The flu season typically starts in mid-October, peaks in winter and continues through late spring. Medicare says the shot is covered for people with Medicare from providers that accept Medicare or your Medicare plan; and it is safe to get your flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine at the same time. 

So far the CDC reports cases of Influenza (flu) are currently low nationally, but detect a slow but steady increase in parts of the U.S. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses infecting the nose, throat, and lungs. Older people, young children, and those with certain health conditions are at higher risk of serious complications. The two main types of influenza are known as viruses A and B, and are responsible for our seasonal flu epidemics each year.

The common cold and the flu are both respiratory illnesses but caused by different viruses. There are ways to distinguish between the two including how your symptoms come on. A cold starts gradually and the flu hits you fast. It is rare to have a fever with a cold but typical in the case of the flu. Aches and chills are common with the flu but not so much with a cold. You will most likely feel fatigued and weak with the flu. Chest discomfort is another common sign of the flu and mild to moderate in a cold. Stuffy noses and sore throats are typical cold symptoms, while headaches are rare but frequent with the flu. It actually boosts serotonin and dopamine, the neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for feelings of satisfaction and wellbeing; causing a sense of pleasure. The Mayo Clinic explains kindness has been “shown to increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, and improve mood. We all know the importance of having an excellent management team leading any type of organization, including a senior living community. At MorningStar at River Oaks assisted living and memory care community, we are blessed to have just such a team in place.

Starting with MorningStar’s Executive Director, Suzanne Kelley, who exemplifies the values we look for in our team – character, kindness and selflessness; she brings to River Oaks several years of experience in long-term care administration. Suzanne says she is thrilled to be working for a company like MorningStar whose core beliefs guide us in our ability to communicate, empathize, and support those around us. 

Our Wellness Director is Monique Cooper-Bickham who understands the wisdom of seniors can only be appreciated if you take the time to sit and listen to their stories. The first senior she ever loved was her grandmother, Mere’Mere’. When Mere'Mere was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Monique moved back to New Orleans to care for her. Routine Skin Checks can Catch Skin Cancer Early

The Skin Care Foundation reports the world’s most common cancer is of the skin and strikes one in five people by age 70. The good news is 99 percent of all cases are curable if they are diagnosed and treated early enough. However, to spot skin cancer, we need to look for it, which is why doctors recommend adults to do a routine skin check once a month and to have an annual skin check with a dermatologist at least once a year.  

Since we are the best one to notice any changes in our skin, it helps to know what to look for. Experts explain skin cancers appear in many shapes and sizes, and warning signs associated with the different types of skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (also called basal cell skin cancer) is the most common type of skin cancer accounting for 8 out of 10 cases. Basal cell cancer starts in the basal cell layer (the lower part of the epidermis).

The Mayo Clinic explains squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) develops in the squamous cells that make up the middle and outer layers of the skin. While not life-threatening, it can be aggressive and typically occurs on sun-exposed skin including the scalp, the backs the hands, ears or lips, but can also occur on any part of the body. 

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and generally develops anywhere in the body that has been exposed to UV light. Additionally it may be found in spots not typically exposed to sunlight such as the bottom of the feet. The Mayo Clinic says melanoma can start as a change in an existing mole or a development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on the skin. 

It is important to avoid UV light from the sun or tanning beds as it is one of the top culprits to damaging and aging the skin as well as causing skin cancer. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if you have a sore or scab that doesn't heal in about two months or a flat patch of scaly skin that doesn’t go away.

Help for Alleviating Swollen Ankles & Feet

Many older adults have problems with their circulatory system. Since blood flows through the veins in our legs upward into our heart, the force of gravity can work against us making it harder to push the blood up. When seniors spend lots of time sitting or standing, it can make blood flow problems worse. In some individuals the problem can lead to edema, a buildup of fluid in the feet and lower legs causing puffy, swollen ankles and feet. 

Experts explain while the condition is generally benign, it needs to be checked out by your healthcare provider as it can be a sign of something more serious. Dr. Elizabeth Ratchford, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Vascular Medicine and an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, says whole-body problems that can lead to leg swelling include heart failure, kidney failure and liver failure. Blood clots and heart conditions can also cause swollen, painful legs and require immediate medical attention. 

Regardless of the reason, Dr. Ratchford says tips to relieve the swelling typically include compression, elevation, exercise, and weight loss. Elevating your feet on a pillow can help venous blood flow back to the heart as does wearing knee-hi compression socks when sitting or standing for long periods of time. If possible avoid standing for long periods and take frequent breaks when sitting. 

Another tip experts say is to spend at least 30 minutes a day exercising as it helps calf muscles push blood upward. If you are overweight, losing weight will relieve some of the pressure on the leg veins. Also reducing salt in your diet can help.

The Medical News Today describes cardiorespiratory endurance by how well our bodies “supply fuel during physical activity via the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems.” Exercises to improve cardio endurance are ones that elevate the heart rate for a sustained amount of time and include swimming, jogging, brisk walking, and cycling. However, doctors say any new exercise should be started slowly, and to gradually build intensity.

To build muscle, you need to routinely do exercises that initially tire the muscle out as well as take in enough protein. Experts say your body composition can change dramatically with physical exercise and a person with a high muscle ratio may weigh more than someone else of a similar height and size.

Tips to Protect Your Eyes

As we age, we can encounter various medical problems with our eyes. The Lancet reports by 2050 an estimated 895 million people worldwide will develop vision impairments (a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years). Experts say over 90 percent of people 65 and older will have a cataract, and half of those between 75 and 85 years old will have some vision loss due to a cataract. An Australian study found that by 80 years old, one in eight people have glaucoma. The Lancet articles say that while this sounds alarming, many vision problems can be treated, and even prevented by following some simple, healthy habits. 

Recommendations for eye care include wearing sunglasses whenever we are in the sun to protect our eyes from UV light, which is just as bad for our eyes as it is for our skin. Wear sunglasses rated as a 100 percent protection against UVA and UVB, or a 100 percent protection against UV 400. 

Eating a nutrient-rich diet is another important step to healthy eyes. Foods good for eyesight include dark-green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and collard greens that contain lutein and zeaxanthin. Research suggests they can block high-energy blue light that attacks the retinal cells. Other foods good for eyes are carrots, squash and sweet potatoes as well as foods high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Experts say getting enough sleep each night and exercising helps our eyes stay strong. A study from the University of California Los Angeles suggests “brisk walking may also lower your risk of getting glaucoma, with the most active among us having a 73 percent lower risk than the least active.” Also get in the habit of cleaning your lids at the base of the lashes with a mild soap or a pre-packaged eye lid scrub; and if you need another reason to quit smoking, quit for the health of your eyesight. Lastly, get regular eye exams.

Why Heart Disease can be Overlooked in Women

The online journal, Medical News Today’s reports women and girls across the world still face challenges and discrimination in medical settings both as patients and prospective medical workers. One example of an area in which women’s medical health is often overlooked and misdiagnosed is coronary heart disease (CHD) despite the fact that it is the leading cause of death for women. 

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute explains CHD occurs when the arteries delivering oxygenated blood into the heart (where it is pumped out to the other organs) are not able to “service” the heart effectively. Studies show women may also be more at risk for developing non-obstructive CHD, a condition that causes the arteries going into the heart to be abnormally squeezed by surrounding tissue.

CHD symptoms can vary between individuals as well as differ in men and women; and non-obstructive CHD can be symptom-less and go undetected for years. To complicate matters, research shows women’s symptoms are atypical and include things like “back pain, burning in the chest, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or fatigue — which makes the diagnosis more difficult.” Additionally studies show part of the problem is too often women wait to get medical attention. Sadly it is frequently after the disease has progressed, and the damage is harder to treat. Researchers also say most of the CHD studies done in the past have concentrated on men and have underrepresented women.  Hopefully in the future, more women will be included.

We All have Time for a Little “Mindfulness”

Many of us feel like our lives are busy and each day filled with a list of responsibilities and tasks. While this may be true, experts stress the importance of taking a few minutes out of our day to practice mindfulness. They say the point is to make time to be in the present each day in order to reconnect with ourselves and feel a sense of calmness. In other words, notice the brightness of the flowers, the songs of the birds, the clouds in the sky, etc., and who among us doesn’t need that? 

Science is now exploring mindfulness and how it can affect our overall state of happiness and reduce stress, anxiety, and negative behaviors. Research suggests the practice can also improve physical health by lowering blood pressure, treating heart disease and improving sleep as well as reducing chronic pain. Moreover along with a relaxed state of mind, studies show the practice of mindfulness can improve a person’s concentration and memory skills. 

Kabat-Zinn, founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, was one of the first to bring the practice of mindfulness meditation into mainstream medicine. His research demonstrated how the practice of mindfulness “can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health, attitudes, and behaviors.”


To practice mindfulness, which is a form of mediation, there are several methods you can use to get started but experts say the most important thing is to keep trying. Suggestions include joining a group, listening to calming music or finding a quiet spot to sit. However, whatever your method, the goal is to find a sense of focused relaxation, concentrating on the present, and reflecting on emotions and thoughts without judgement.

Sleep Experts Offer Tips for a Better Night Sleep

Whether it is chronic or happens every once in a while, most of us have had a restless night and woke up feeling tired. For some it is hard to fall asleep, while for others, it is difficult to stay asleep for the whole night. Sleep experts offer several tips for a restful night’s sleep and a more productive, positive day.  

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Sleep Research Society (SRS) explain sleep is as important to a healthy lifestyle as good nutrition and regular exercise. To become a better sleeper, it helps to know something about the different components of sleep.   

The current thinking for a normal night’s sleep is between seven to nine hours a night, or during a 24-hour period. They say to determine your optimal sleep amount, experiment for a few weeks by going to bed each night when you get tired and waking naturally in the morning. Another thing is to deal with health issues, which may interfere with your sleep, like restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, insomnia or other sleep disorders.  

The Mayo Clinic says it helps to go to bed at the same time each night and to wake up at the same time. On weekends try not to change your schedule by more than an hour. They also caution to not eat too heavy of a meal too close to bedtime and avoid nicotine, caffeine and other stimulates several hours before bedtime. The same goes for alcohol as it can make you fall asleep easily but causes you to awake in the middle of the night.  

Get plenty of exercise during the day but avoid doing it right before bed. Another tip is to create a calming atmosphere in the bedroom; and remember our smart devices emit glowing blue lights that experts say can disturb our circadian rhythm.
