Adjust Your Attitude toward “Growing Older”

January 29, 2022 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

New studies suggest our attitude toward growing older may affect how well we do with our own aging process. Researchers report findings that show those who negatively view aging may have a higher likelihood of developing changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. One such study was published in the American Psychological Association’s journal, Psychology and Aging. Its authors suggest if a person shifts their belief about aging to a more positive view; it may be beneficial in helping to mitigate the ravages of Alzheimer’s.

Associate professor of public health and psychology at the Yale School of Public Health and the study’s leader, Becca Levy said, “We believe it is the stress generated by the negative beliefs about aging that individuals sometimes internalize from society that can result in pathological brain changes.” She says while these findings are concerning, “it is encouraging to realize that these negative beliefs about aging can be mitigated, and positive beliefs about aging can be reinforced, so that the adverse impact is not inevitable.”

The research was part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging; a long-term study based out of Baltimore. All participants had been part of the study for decades and were healthy adults free of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The survey questions focused on individuals' beliefs regarding aging. Negative views included the belief elderly people are sickly, absent-minded, have little to contribute, and are unable to concentrate well. Positive beliefs included thinking older people can lead vibrant lives and be actively engaged in society.

Participants were also given regular MRI brain scans to check for signs of Alzheimer’s.  Those who answered questions about aging negatively were discovered to have a “greater decline in the volume of the hippocampus, a part of the brain critical for memory.” Researchers explain this is important as “the hippocampus is one of the first areas of the brain to shrink in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.”  Brain autopsies were conducted on 74 patients who died during the study. Those who were more negative about aging had more plaques and tangles in their brain, which is associated with Alzheimer’s; than their more positive counterparts.

Becca Levy and other researchers hypothesize that Americans hold a more negative view on aging as compared to countries such as India; it could contribute to Alzheimer’s being five times more prevalent in our country. However, while positive thinking is no guarantee for good brain health, it certainly helps us feel better.

Family Members are Impacted by an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

January 28, 2022 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next.

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it.

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

The newly opened MorningStar at River Oaks epitomizes the finest assisted living in Houston, TX. Is Assisted Living the Right Place for Mom or Dad?

January 27, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

While assisted living has been around in the U.S. for the last several decades, some people are still confused as to what it means. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral services, explains assisted living communities offer long-term housing for seniors to safely age in place. As it is not skilled nursing care, assisted living residents are overall active and independent, but may need support with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, and using the toilet. As a resident, you get 24/7 care and nutrition, daily meals as well as benefit from a range of wellness programs, the company of fellow residents and staff, and peace of mind knowing help is at hand if needed.

The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA NCAL) reports assisted living is a fast growing sector of senior living with over 800,000 Americans currently residing in an assisted living community. Experts say in some cases, depending on the level of services provided, in-home care can actually be more expensive and doesn’t offer all of the services and amenities found in many assisted living communities.

Homes like the newly opened MorningStar at River Oaks provide residents with much more than supportive care. Our Life Enrichment programs offer physical, intellectual, spiritual or social engagement with creative ways to stay active and productive as we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.

MorningStar at River Oaks is part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, whose mission is to “cast a new light on senior living.” We start by creating a true home for the remarkable residents beneath our roofs, made possible by a dedicated team who understands the highest expression of living is to share their talents, time and energy with others. Tips to Soothe an Upset Stomach

January 25, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

Every now and then, most of us suffer from an upset stomach. Experts say experiencing a stomach ache once in a while is perfectly normal and can be caused by stress or anxiety, food allergies, eating something that doesn’t agree with you, or a 24-hour bug. To ease symptoms and help you feel better, experts recommend several foods.

Just as mom told you, chicken-broth is good for an upset stomach as it contains many necessary nutrients. The broth also helps you stay hydrated if you have bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. Plain food like saltine crackers or dry white toast (skip the whole wheat for now) are easy to digest and give your stomach a little something to help it settle down.

Ginger has been used for centuries to help ease digestive problems including an upset stomach. Drinking ginger tea or eating a couple of ginger chews may help you feel better. Dr. Carolyn Kaloostian, clinical associate professor of family medicine and family medicine specialist at Keck Medicine of USC, says there are several other herbs and spices that can help including licorice, chamomile, spearmint and mint.

Foods like oatmeal, plain eggs, unseasoned skinless turkey, chicken or fish are all good choices to try to get a little something in your stomach without upsetting it more. Yogurt may be beneficial as it contains probiotics that can help promote healthy digestion but experts advise sticking to low-fat or no-fat varieties.

Moving into a Retirement Community? Tips to Help Downsize

January 21, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Housing

If you are ready to begin a new chapter in your retirement years, love the idea of maintenance-free living, or would like to move closer to family; why not consider a 55+ community. Moving into smaller living quarters also means lower utility bills, less space to clean and less clutter in your life.

This also means you may have to downsize as senior living apartments are generally smaller than your family home. Think of it as an opportunity to get rid of stuff you have been hanging on to for years, and most likely no longer need. If after looking around your home and realizing you have a big job ahead of you, it may be time to get a few tips from organizing experts?

On top of the list is to take into account the size of your new home. This will give you a good idea of what you should take and what needs to go. If you are helping an older parent go through their home, remember change can be difficult and letting go of possessions, also means letting go of their old way of life. Be respectful and recognize objects are not just things but memories.

Organizing experts say there are four important questions to ask yourself when sorting through items:

  • Do I need it or want it?

  • Does it have sentimental value?

  • Do I use it often?

  • Do I have another item that performs the same function?

Obviously the most difficult things to get rid of are those with sentimental value but there are other ways to keep the memories. One solution is to find a good home for something you no longer need but know someone who would enjoy it. Even for those items you donate to charity, focus on the good it will do for others.

Don’t be shy about asking for help from family or friends, or hire a company that specializes in clearing houses. Another thing experts recommend is to take time to say goodbye to the house but to remember you are moving forward with a new, exciting chapter.

MorningStar of Kirkland is a vibrant, new 55+ community complete with resort-style amenities and hospitality services. Opening in the first quarter of 2022, our 151 spacious apartments are available in a variety of floorplans and configurations. Please visit our website for contact information and to learn more about the finest senior housing Kirkland offers.

Some Medications Can Increase the Risk of Falling

January 20, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports 36 million older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 32,000 deaths. Of those falls, 3 million seniors are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk.

The first step is to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking one of these medications, as medications are the most common reason for falls. Furthermore, experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication like one known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage.

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition, be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. Lastly check your home for trip hazards (keep clutter out of hallways and stairways) and install grab bars and better lighting where needed.

Rid Yourself of Items that Do Not Add Value to Your Life

January 18, 2022 by MStar Living in Retirement communities

Known as the “Minimalists,” Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn spend their time helping people to learn to live with less. They say a typical house contains as many as 300,000 items; and their advice is to rid yourself of items that do not add value to your life. While obviously easier said than done, if you are an older adult who is trying to downsize for a move to senior housing, the following tips may help.

One suggestion is to start by decluttering; not only does it give you more space in your new home but living around clutter has been linked to anxiety and stress. When you throw away or donate stuff cluttering up your home, it gives room for the things you really like. Less stuff lightens your load and helps you get into the habit of not buying things you don’t need. Not only does this mindset save money, but Fields Millburn explains, "Understanding the why behind simplifying gives us the leverage we need to begin to let go and helps us understand what is excess.”

The Minimalists recommend letting go of items you are hanging on to under the “just in case” category. Remember most things can be easily replaced if needed and in the meantime your load will be that much lighter.

Other suggestions include getting rid of blurry or duplicate photos, junk mail, documents and paperwork no longer needed, and old magazines and newspapers. If you want to further reduce your physical load, scan photos as well as paperwork you wish to save. Throw away broken or damaged items, or missing parts. If you have two hair dryers, choose one to keep and one to donate. Do the same with other duplicates. Get rid of books you will never read, clothes that don’t fit or are uncomfortable, and stuff you never use. Do the same with supplies and equipment from hobbies or sports you are no longer interested in; and if you are retired, downsize your professional wardrobe. Use this mindset when going through the rest of your household items.

We would like to introduce you to the newest senior living in Hillsboro, OR. Located in the popular AmberGlen neighborhood, MorningStar of Hillsboro is close to shopping at Tanasbourne Town Center, dining, entertainment and green spaces including Tualatin Hills Nature Park. Exercises can Help Seniors Maintain their Independence

January 15, 2022 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

As we grow older, many people begin to slow down. However we know a lack of exercise and activity can cause reduced muscle strength and flexibility, and lead to health problems that make beginning exercise that much more difficult. In fact a recent government study estimated “nearly 80% of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week, with adults 65 and older being the least likely to engage in a regular exercise routine.”

This is why experts recommend older adults make a plan to stay more active and commit to it. Before you begin any new exercise or activity, talk to your doctor as your health challenges may make some physical activities not possible. Guidance from your healthcare providers can help develop a plan most effective in achieving overall conditioning despite any limited endurance.

Areas to focus on include strengthening leg muscles to improve mobility and balance, which is part of maintaining your independence as strong legs support so many basic everyday activities, such as sitting down, standing up, and walking. In addition, safe upper body exercises are important in giving a person the strength to get up from an armchair or carrying and lifting items as part of performing routine household activities. Exercises focusing on maintaining or improving balance are also important in reducing a person’s risk for a fall.

*Before starting any new exercise, please consult with your healthcare provider.

MorningStar of Pasadena is a vibrant 55+ community with 149 bright suites for independent living and assisted living. We are an all-inclusive community, boasting a dining service under the direction of our Executive Chef, a wide range of floor plans to meet residents’ varying needs, and onsite amenities and care services for stress-free retirement years. February is American Heart Month

January 12, 2022 by MStar Living in Independent Living

The CDC says February is American Heart Month, making it the time to focus on cardiovascular disease. Experts say this includes: shining a light on hypertension (high blood pressure), a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s National Wear Red Day® is on the first Friday in February. The campaign encourages people to show their support by wearing red and encouraging family, friends and co-workers to do the same.

Focusing on heart disease is important as it is the leading cause of death in the US for both men and women; and the awareness campaign helps people to realize it is largely preventable. Experts stress that every adult should be aware of their risk and know the healthy choices to make to reduce their chance of heart disease including coronary heart disease, which is the primary cause of heart attacks.

The NIH explains your risk of heart disease is higher if you:

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Have high blood cholesterol

  • Are overweight or obese

  • Have prediabetes or diabetes

  • Smoke

  • Do not get regular physical activity

  • Have a family history of early heart disease (your father or brother was diagnosed before age 55, or your mother or sister was diagnosed before age 65)

  • Have a history of preeclampsia (a sudden rise in blood pressure and too much protein in the urine during pregnancy)

  • Have unhealthy eating behaviors

  • Are older (age 55 or older for women or age 45 or older for men)

Experts say for each risk you have, the higher your overall risk is for heart disease. While some risks cannot be helped such as your gender, age and family history, it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider what you can do to reduce your risk. Also the NIH says it can be helpful to join #OurHearts in Action, a group designed to encourage and motivate heart-healthy behaviors together.

The MorningStar of Pasadena 55+ community offers area seniors comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting. With 149 apartments for independent living and assisted living, we have a selection of floor plans and configurations sure to please the most discerning seniors. A broad range of amenities and services are designed to meet residents’ needs. For your safety, each suite is equipped with handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Now in an Important Time to Support Your Immune System

January 10, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Along with the continuing pandemic, winter is the height of the flu season as well as other respiratory and cold viruses. Experts say this means it is more important than ever to boost our immune system to help fight off disease-causing microorganisms.

The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. As it records every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated, our system can quickly recognize and destroy the microbe if/when it enters the body again.

Michael Starnbach, professor of microbiology at Harvard Medical School, explains supporting the immune system is multi-faceted, and the first line of defense is to follow a healthy lifestyle. Recommendations to boost our immune systems include:

  • Don't smoke.

  • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.

  • Exercise regularly.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

  • Get adequate sleep.

  • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently, wearing a mask and cooking meats thoroughly.

Research has shown the immune systems of older people are weaker, placing them at a higher risk for contracting infectious diseases. As they are also more likely to die from the disease, they especially need to take steps to protect themselves. Starnbach says this “includes getting the Covid vaccine and booster shot, along with other recommended vaccinations.” He says, “Think of vaccination as a cheat sheet for your immune system. A vaccine introduces the immune system to the invader ahead of time and allows it to develop a battle plan.” If you do get the virus, your immune system is ready to react quickly and perhaps prevent symptoms altogether or at least serious illness.

Know Your Numbers for Better Health

January 08, 2022 by MStar Living in Senior Living

Medical experts say there are five numbers adults should know that can impact their health. Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, editor-in-chief at the Harvard Heart Letter and part of the interventional cardiovascular programs at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, explains, "For my patients, I typically look at their blood pressure, blood sugar, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides values, and their waist circumference."

While there are specific recommendations, doctors also say the ideal values are good goals for most people but your doctor may suggest different numbers based on your age and other health conditions. Current recommended blood pressure numbers are less than 120/80 mm Hg. Systolic blood pressure is the first number and diastolic blood pressure, the second number, and together they measure how hard your heart is working and the condition of your blood vessels. High blood pressure (HBP) can damage blood vessels and increase a person’s risk for a stroke or heart attack.

Your LDL cholesterol numbers should be less than 100 mg/dL and your triglycerides less than 150 mg/dL. A cholesterol test is done through a blood draw after a person has fasted and if both your numbers are high, it increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke. Another important number is your blood sugar levels, which is how diabetes is typically diagnosed. Doctors say blood sugar levels should be less than 100 mg/dL.

Finally the last number you should pay attention to for better health is your waistline measurement. Experts say the circumference should be either lower than: less than half your height in inches; or for women less than 35 inches, and for men less than 40 inches. The problem with big numbers is what doctors call “abdominal or visceral obesity” typically an indication of fat surrounding the internal organs. Use a tape measure placed just above your navel (belly button) to get your number. *Consult with your physician regarding testing to determine your own numbers and strategies to improve them.

Tips to Improve Concentration

January 07, 2022 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

As we grow older, not only do our physical abilities slow down but so do our cognitive abilities. We may find ourselves not able to remember facts the same way we used to or have difficulty thinking about two problems at the same time. Professionals say these changes make it harder for us to stay focused and easier to get distracted. You may not recall new information as you did in the past because you didn’t really learn it.

Changes can start as early as in our 50s and 60s but experts say to remember that most age-related memory loss and thinking problems are normal and not necessarily a sign of Alzheimer’s. They explain it can “simply reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” Despite your brain moving a little slower, your judgement is still intact and you have the ability to make sense of what you know and form reasonable arguments. Another thing to consider is even the smallest hearing loss can make processing new information more difficult.

Research shows while our ability to concentrate diminishes, there are things we can do to improve it.  A 2015 study found participants who played brain games 15 minutes, 5 days a week had a big impact on improving their concentration. Another small study in 2018 saw an improvement in seniors’ visual selective attention (VSA), the ability to concentrate on a specific task while ignoring distractions, after playing video games. Recommended cognitive activities include things like crosswords puzzles, Sudoku, chess, jigsaw puzzles and other memory games.

Medications that Increase Your Risk for a Fall

January 03, 2022 by MStar Living in Independent Living

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year; and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and a vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Certain Medications Cause Memory Problems in Seniors

December 31, 2021 by MStar Living

As we age, many seniors experience occasional “brain fog” or forgetfulness and have trouble comprehending and processing new information. Medical experts say this may be a normal part of aging but could also be from some of the medications you are taking.

Dr. Mark Albers, a neurologist at the McCance Center for Brain Health at Harvard - affiliated with the Massachusetts General Hospital, says it is not all that uncommon for seniors to experience symptoms of brain fog when taking certain medications for the first time. He explains medications can affect memory more in aging adults as “older people tend to metabolize drugs more slowly, making them more sensitive to medications and more vulnerable to side effects.”

Other reasons medications cause more problems in seniors are they often take larger doses of a drug and more frequently as well as take several drugs to treat one health condition. Moreover older people may have a weakened blood-brain barrier. This barrier works to block toxins and other harmful substances including drugs from entering the brain, which may account for some memory problems.

Sleep medications are one of the common medications that can be problematic. Over-the-counter sleeping aids can contain anticholinergic drugs, which are known to impair cognitive function, and some prescription sleep drugs diminish activity in parts of the brain involved in transferring short-term memories to long-term memory. Pain medications can additionally result in memory problems. The good news is once patients stop taking sleep or pain meds, modify the dose or replace the drug with a better option, many of the problems go away.
