Studies Show Yoga is Good for Our Brain

November 12, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities, Independent Living

While practitioners have known for centuries the calmness and peace yoga brings into their lives, science has finally caught up with real evidence of its benefits to our brains. Studies show yoga elevates levels of the brain chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid (GAGA), which helps regulate nerve activity and is associated with better mood and decreased anxiety.

The Harvard Medical School journal writes, “Yoga strengthens parts of the brain that play a key role in memory, attention, awareness, thought, and language. Think of it as weightlifting for the brain.” Their evidence comes from several studies that used MRI and other brain imaging technology. Researchers found participants who practiced yoga regularly had a thicker cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, than participants who did not practice yoga.

This could be significant because as people age, this is one of the areas in the brain that typically shrinks. As the older yoga practitioners had less shrinkage than non-practitioners, researchers say it suggests yoga can “counteract age-related declines in memory and other cognitive skills.”

Other benefits of yoga include helping individuals lose weight, sleep better, lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels to improve diabetes. It also helps people gain flexibility and muscle strength around arthritic joints and reduces the pain associated with the condition.

We All have Time for a Little “Mindfulness”

November 11, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior, Independent Living

Many of us feel like our lives are busy and each day filled with a list of responsibilities and tasks. While this may be true, experts stress the importance of taking a few minutes out of our day to practice mindfulness. They say the point is to make time to be in the present each day in order to reconnect with ourselves and feel a sense of calmness. In other words, notice the brightness of the flowers, the songs of the birds, the clouds in the sky, etc., and who among us doesn’t need that?

Science is now exploring mindfulness and how it can affect our overall state of happiness and reduce stress, anxiety, and negative behaviors. Research suggests the practice can also improve physical health by lowering blood pressure, treating heart disease and improving sleep as well as reducing chronic pain. Moreover along with a relaxed state of mind, studies show the practice of mindfulness can improve a person’s concentration and memory skills.

Kabat-Zinn, founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, was one of the first to bring the practice of mindfulness meditation into mainstream medicine. His research demonstrated how the practice of mindfulness “can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health, attitudes, and behaviors.”

To practice mindfulness, which is a form of mediation, there are several methods you can use to get started but experts say the most important thing is to keep trying. Suggestions include joining a group, listening to calming music or finding a quiet spot to sit. However, whatever your method, the goal is to find a sense of focused relaxation, concentrating on the present, and reflecting on emotions and thoughts without judgement.

With the opening of the MorningStar at River Oaks community, senior living in Houston just got a whole lot better. Our beautiful, warm and welcoming senior living community offers residents all the services they need to live life to the fullest. In addition to assisted living, our community offers individualized memory care, respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (from a week to a full month) to see if we are a good fit.

Take a Holistic Approach to Physical Fitness

November 10, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities, Healthy senior

Medical experts explain physical fitness includes five important components that help determine our overall health. They are defined as cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility.

The Medical News Today describes cardiorespiratory endurance by how well our bodies “supply fuel during physical activity via the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems.” Exercises to improve cardio endurance are ones that elevate the heart rate for a sustained amount of time and include swimming, jogging, brisk walking, and cycling. Cardio exercises strengthen the heart muscle allowing it to pump more blood per heartbeat, which in turn, reduces the risk for heart attacks, stroke and type 2 diabetes. However doctors say any new exercise should be started slowly, and to gradually build intensity.*

To build muscle, you need to routinely do exercises that initially tire the muscle out as well as take in enough protein. As you train, your endurance will improve as the muscles begin working together to increase maximum strength. Experts say your body composition can change dramatically with physical exercise and a person with a high muscle ratio may weigh more than someone else of a similar height and size.

Flexibility is another important aspect of physical fitness. Staying flexible can help avoid injuries, improve balance and for seniors, lower their risk of a fall. There are several different types of stretching and if you are an older adult, talk to your doctor about the best type of stretches to do.

*Before beginning any new type of exercise, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider.

At the MorningStar of Kirkland 55+ community, we offer residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and community. We are scheduled to open at the end of 2021, and along with contemporary-style apartments, residents will enjoy a full range of luxury amenities and hospitality services. One Food Group is Common to the World’s Healthy People

November 09, 2021 by MStar Living in Independent Living, Assisted Living

When we look at cultures with a reputation for longevity, leading nutritionists and food scientists say there is one food group that stands out. “Blue zones,” areas known for having many of their inhabitants live to an advanced age of hundred years or more, include in their diet, five of the ten most recommended foods. All are from the bean family and include lentils, soybeans, peanuts (a legume in the same family as peas and lentils), chickpeas and black beans.

People living on the Japanese island of Okinawa might enjoy a dinner of stir-fried green beans, soybeans or mung sprouts. Another meal in Nicoya, Costa Rica typically includes black beans. Known for a high level of anthocyanins, a pigment that gives red, purple, and blue plants their rich coloring, beans help fight free radicals and offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits. In fact anthocyanins offer 10 times the antioxidants of an equivalent serving of oranges.

Nutritionists say beans also boost the immune system by supplying the fiber our microbiomes need. They suggest the local diet of people in blue zones help them avoid many of the same health risks Americans suffer from such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancers.

At the MorningStar at River Oaks assisted living and memory care community, we offer residents a lifestyle in which to comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition our all-day dining service includes meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef and made largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients. Located in Houston’s Upper Kirby neighborhood, architectural features include a sixth-floor sky terrace and lounge offering spectacular views of downtown, courtyards with fireplace and BBQ, and a grand entrance portal located on Revere Street. Our 112 suites range in size from 350 to 1,090 sq. ft. with a choice of floor plans and configurations to please the most discerning seniors. Visit our website for further information and pricing and availability.

Independent Living Offers Many Advantageous

November 08, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

Did you know more and more older adults are making the choice to move into senior living communities?  Seniors are embracing the idea of giving up home maintenance and spending more time doing what they love best including being able to travel without worrying about snow piling up or the lawn needing to be mowed. Independent living communities offer private apartments designed to meet residents’ needs along with common areas ideal for sitting and relaxing with friends and dining rooms offering delicious restaurant-style meals.

Another reason many seniors are choosing independent living communities is the appeal of living among like-minded people of the same age. Socializing is important to our wellbeing and isolation can lead to depression or worsen health problems. For seniors who no longer work and/or have stopped or limited their driving, it can get more and more difficult to maintain normal social interactions. Senior living communities offer easy opportunities for residents to meet new friends or engage in social activities and special events.

At senior living communities such as MorningStar of Pasadena, we offer transportation services and also take to the road every so often for trips to local parks, shopping malls, museums and other spots of interest. We also bring in live entertainment and host special events throughout the year. Wellness activities include exercise classes, life enrichment classes and more. We also know security is important to peace of mind, and community living gives that to seniors and their families.

If you are someone who requires a little help with their daily personal care, we offer assisted living delivered by 24/7 care managers, licensed nurses and medication managers. MorningStar of Pasadena senior living community is a vibrant 55+ community in the heart of beautiful Pasadena, and offers 149 bright suites, luxury amenities and concierge services for relaxing, stress-free retirement. Please visit our website for information on the finest independent living and assisted living Pasadena, CA offers.

Neuroscience Links Exercise to Brain Health

November 07, 2021 by MStar Living in Dementia care

We know exercise contributes to a person’s overall health and results in stronger muscles, a healthier heart and even a better night’s sleep. Now a neuroscientist is speaking up about the benefits exercise offers to our cognitive health. Wendy Suzuki, PhD, a neuroscientist and professor of Neural Science and Psychology in the Center for Neural Science at New York University, explains, “I’ve found that exercising is one of the most transformative things you can do to improve cognitive abilities, such as learning, thinking, memory, focus and reasoning — all of which can help you become smarter and live longer.”

Suzuki says each time we move our bodies’ beneficial neurotransmitters are released into the brain including dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and acetylcholine, which transmits signals from nerve cells to target cells. These target cells may be in muscles, glands, or other nerves and can affect our sleep cycles, moods and concentration including a decrease in feelings of depression and anxiety. Research has shown it only takes as little as 10 to 30 minutes of exercise per day to elevate mood.

Another important study shows how exercise promotes neurogenesis (the birth of new brain cells) and improves the brain’s function. The longitudinal study out of Sweden spans 44-years, and reports “women who scored high on a fitness test in midlife were nearly 90 percent less likely than their moderately fit or unfit peers to develop dementia decades later.” Moreover researchers say the fittest women held dementia at bay at least 10 years longer than their peers. So the next question is how much exercise do we need to get results? Suzuki says to try for 90 to 120 minutes a week. This can be broken down in daily increments or three to four sessions a week.

For trusted assisted living Houston seniors can count on, take a look at the new MorningStar at River Oaks, the perfect community to comfortably and safely age in place. Seniors who do not yet require assistance with day-to-day care but love the sound of a supportive community and a more active social life may also be interested in River Oaks. If you are recovering from a surgical procedure or illness, ask about our respite care or short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. It is Never Too Late to Get Healthier

November 06, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.

Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact studies find people, who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests, can improve their cognitive health.

Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies,  “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”

Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and worry and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up-to-date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health is to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

MorningStar of Pasadena is a 55+ community that offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and as much or as little social engagement as you want. Our range of onsite amenities, hospitality and care services, and wellness programs and activities are designed for stress-free retirement years. Please visit our website for pricing and availability on unsurpassed independent living and assisted living in Pasadena, CA.

Improve Flexibility & Balance by Stretching

November 04, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

Have you noticed you are no longer as flexible as you used to be and the movements of your limbs and joints feel more restricted? If it harder to do things like turning your neck to look behind you when driving or getting up from a low chair, you would probably benefit from incorporating stretches into your routine. Experts say daily stretching can make significant improvement in flexibility, the ability of the muscles and tendons to lengthen and stretch in response to movement, and allow a joint to move through its range of motion.

In addition being more flexible improves balance and lowers the risk for a fall. Stretching increases the range of movement in the joints, improves posture and eases muscle tension and soreness as well as increases circulation. Along with dedicated stretching exercises, seniors can increase flexibility with yoga, Pilates, swimming, tai chi, dancing and massage.

A recent study on a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults reported by the Journal of Gerontology found “participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also experienced a decrease in pain.”

It is easy to do stretching exercises as they do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere. However before beginning any new exercise routine including stretching, consult with your healthcare provider regarding your fitness level. Experts say you should warm up before stretching such as taking a walk around the block, which in itself helps to stretch muscles and tendons. Also don’t stretch to the point of pain, only to the point of tension; or bounce when stretching. Typically hold the stretch for no more than 30 seconds.

Senior living in Pasadena, CA is better than ever at our beautiful MorningStar of Pasadena independent living and assisted living community. Sleep Experts Offer Tips for a Better Night Sleep

November 03, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior, Independent Living

Whether it is chronic or happens every once in a while, most of us have had a restless night and woke up feeling tired. For some it is hard to fall asleep, while for others, it is difficult to stay asleep for the whole night. Sleep experts offer several tips for a restful night’s sleep and a more productive, positive day.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Sleep Research Society (SRS) explain sleep is as important to a healthy lifestyle as good nutrition and regular exercise. To become a better sleeper, it helps to know something about the different components of sleep.

The current thinking for a normal night’s sleep is between seven to nine hours a night, or during a 24-hour period. They say to determine your optimal sleep amount, experiment for a few weeks by going to bed each night when you get tired and waking naturally in the morning. Another thing is to deal with health issues, which may interfere with your sleep, like restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, insomnia or other sleep disorders.

The Mayo Clinic says it helps to go to bed at the same time each night and to wake up at the same time. On weekends try not to change your schedule by more than an hour. They also caution to not eat too heavy of a meal too close to bedtime and avoid nicotine, caffeine and other stimulates several hours before bedtime. The same goes for alcohol as it can make you fall asleep easily but causes you to awake in the middle of the night.

Get plenty of exercise during the day but avoid doing it right before bed. Another tip is to create a calming atmosphere in the bedroom; and remember our smart devices emit glowing blue lights that experts say can disturb our circadian rhythm.

MorningStar at River Oaks is an assisted living and memory care community designed to provide Houston seniors a comfortable home to safely age in place. We offer a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities, along with a sense of security knowing someone is always around if needed. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

October 31, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

National Diabetes Awareness Month is in November and is the time for educating and raising awareness and funds for both better treatments and a cure. This year’s focus will be on prediabetes and preventing diabetes. The CDC reports more than 1 in 3 U.S. adults have prediabetes (around 88 million people), and of that number, the majority is unaware they have it. In addition every 21 seconds someone is told they have diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association says the disease causes more deaths than breast cancer and AIDS combined each year and the related health care costs are $327 billion. In November, communities will team up to bring attention to the disease and provide education on how to recognize and prevent the disease. The Association raises awareness and support in several ways including the Tour de Cure and the Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes and other events.

Their site also has lots of ideas of how to “create your own fundraiser.” Some ideas include hosting a trivia or game night, a tea party or dinner, bake sale or yard sale, or a product party. All funds raised will go directly to support research, education, and advocacy for people living with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

MorningStar of Pasadena is a vibrant 55+ community with 149 bright suites for independent living and assisted living. Our all-inclusive community provides a choice of floor plans to meet varying needs as well as onsite amenities and care services for stress-free retirement. Moreover MorningStar of Pasadena’s dining experience is inspired by the belief that diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. We believe through proper diets and healthy choices, food is a healing medicine unlike any other. We also believe it is one of the great joys of living, especially when enjoyed in community. Dealing with High Cholesterol?

October 20, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

If you have been told by your healthcare provider you have high cholesterol, you probably have also been told you will need to watch your diet. The best way to do this is to consume foods that can help lower your LDLs, which are the harmful cholesterol-carrying particles that contribute to artery-clogging atherosclerosis.

Scientists explain how different foods can help in different ways to achieve this purpose. One type is food containing “soluble fiber, which binds cholesterol and its precursors in the digestive system and drags them out of the body before they get into circulation.” Other foods known to be beneficial for lowering LDLs are polyunsaturated fats, and foods with sterols and stanols, which have been shown to absorb cholesterol.

For 1 to 2 grams of soluble fiber, start your day with a bowl of hot oatmeal or a cold oat-based cereal. Later meals can include barley, whole grains or beans to provide additional soluble fiber. Nutritionists say most Americans only get around half the amount of daily fiber they need (guidelines recommend 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day, and at least 5 to 10 grams coming from soluble fiber).

Nuts are known to help lower LDLs as well as provide other benefits to the heart. Oils like safflower, sunflower, olive and peanut contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that help to lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and raise "good" HDL cholesterol. Eating fatty fish once or twice a week such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel, which are loaded with LDL-boosting saturated fats and LDL-lowering omega-3 fats, help reduce triglycerides in the bloodstream.

*Be sure to consult with your physician regarding your diet and other healthcare issues.

MorningStar at River Oaks is putting the finishing touches to our fashionable assisted living community. While not yet open to residents, we are staffed and ready to answer your questions regarding choice of suites, pricing, hospitality and care services, and more. Help Your Elderly Parents Keep Paperwork in Order

October 18, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

In the event of a medical emergency or illness, to file income taxes, or apply for state or federal benefits, experts say it is helpful and maybe even lifesaving for seniors to have their paperwork in order. Important documents to have available to a family member or trusted friend include property deeds, history of financial income and medical information. For example, Stuart Furman, A Place for Mom legal expert and elder attorney, explains if your parent is eligible to apply for veterans’ benefits or Medicaid, they will need proof of past income and financial resources.

If you are the designated person, start by helping your parents compile a record of their bank accounts as well as sources of financial income including pensions, 401(k) information, and annuity contracts. In addition help them organize information regarding savings bonds, stock certificates, or brokerage accounts. File these documents along with all property deeds and titles to vehicles in a home safe where they are secure. Files should also include several years of income taxes as well as a list of credit cards and outstanding loans or debts owed to them.

If your parents have a living will and/or a durable power of attorney, you should have a copy as it is important in the case of a medical emergency to be able to quickly get your hands on such documents. Other things medical professionals say are important to get your hands on quickly is a list of medications your parents are taking, their medical history and insurance cards. Other types of documents to safely file or to create include end of life planning and estate planning.

At the MorningStar of River Oaks assisted living and memory care community, our goal is to be a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love. This is made possible through a dedicated team who understand how to provide residents with a quality of life other communities simply cannot match. Learn More About Cataracts

October 17, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the lens, which is normally transparent, and are the main cause of vision loss in people over 40 years of age. It is estimated more than 40 percent of Americans aged 75 years or older have some degree of lens clouding; and over half of people 80 or older have their vision significantly impaired by cataracts or have had cataract surgery. Surgery is generally recommended once vision is impaired to a degree that people have trouble reading, driving and recognizing faces. Today the surgery is a quick, safe procedure, replacing the cloudy lens with a clear plastic one.

Doctors say there are things people can do to reduce their risk of developing cataracts with quitting smoking at the top of that list. Medical News Today reports on studies linking a 3-fold increase of smoking to cataracts as well as raising the risk of a number of other eye conditions. A healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, good quality fats (avocados, olive oil, and omega oils) and lean animal-sourced or plant-sourced proteins additionally reduces the risk of cataracts.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important as obesity increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a risk factor for cataracts. Other ways to reduce your risk include wearing UV blocking sunglasses when in the sunlight and getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night. The risk for cataracts also increases with age, family history, and a history of eye inflammation or injury.

If you are not ready for surgery yet, doctors say stronger glasses and brighter lights may help. Keep up with regular eye exams and renew your eyeglass prescription as needed. Wear sunglasses in the sun and avoid night driving. As your cataracts continue to develop and eyesight worsen, at some point you will most likely need surgery.

Why Advance Care Directives are Important to You & Your Loved Ones

October 17, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

An advanced directive is a legal document giving you a voice involving medical decisions in the event you are incapacitated. Many people shy away from creating such documents as they fail to realize how important they are, and mistakenly worry they are signing away their lives, and/or don’t like thinking about being so ill they are unable to make decisions.

Advance care planning documents may include a living will, power of attorney and health care proxy. By planning ahead, they guide decisions made on your behalf if you are unable, and suffer from an incurable, irreversible illness, condition or disease determined to be terminal. Living wills specify the kind of medical treatment desired and many simply express the desire to not be given life-sustaining measures that only serve to prolong a person’s death. Specific details may regard care including the use of pain medications, antibiotics, hydration, feeding and the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation or ventilators.

A health care proxy is someone designated to express your wishes for medical care and has the same rights you would in requesting or refusing treatment. A durable power of attorney document names a person to act on your behalf if you are incapacitated and gives them the power to make financial decisions.

The Harvard Medical School reports on some of the myths people have regarding advance care directives. They say you need to realize more care is not always better but can prolong the dying process without respect for quality of life or comfort. Refusing life support does not mean you are committing suicide but rather allowing your medical problem to be the cause of your death. Moreover refusing life-extending treatment does not mean you are refusing comfort measures for pain management and symptoms. Talk to your family and doctor about your medical preferences, and be sure each has a copy of your advance directive documents.

Our Medical Condition May Dictate a Better Time to Exercise

October 16, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

The New York Times published a recent study, which adds to the growing evidence that the time of day we exercise may affect how we benefit from the exercise. The study involved a group of men who were at high risk for Type 2 diabetes; and suggests at least for some, there is a more effective time to exercise each day. For this particular group, researchers say it was more beneficial to exercise in the afternoon rather than mornings. They found afternoon exercise increased the men’s metabolic health and resulted in an improvement in controlling blood sugar and losing belly fat.

Research has shown in both animals and people that quality of health is influenced by the chronology of our day. The reason is the body’s tissue “contains a kind of molecular clock that chimes, in part, in response to biological messages related to our daily exposure to light, food and sleep.” Our “cellular clocks” calibrate as to when we do normal biological jobs such as divide cells and refuel, and responsible for the dips and crest we go through each day involving our temperature, hormone levels, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc.

For other individuals, earlier research suggests exercising in the morning may be more conducive to weight loss and burning body fat. Patrick Schrauwen, a professor of nutrition and movement sciences at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands, says the most effective exercise regimen for each of us will align “with our daily routines” and exercise inclinations. He adds, “I believe doing exercise is better than not doing exercise, irrespective of timing, because exercise is good for us at any time of day — but only if we opt to keep doing it.”

Does Mom or Dad Need Assisted Living?

October 16, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

Are you worried about your elderly parents getting the care they need at home? Assisted living communities are one way to make sure they get the care they need, while giving family members the peace of mind they need.

To help ensure the community you choose is a good, all-around fit, experts say the trick is to find one based on your parents’ needs, their lifestyle and budget, and the location. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, says the key to a successful move for mom or dad is to have a frank and open conversation the family to make sure everyone is on the same page. Be sure your parents have the chance to give their opinion.

When you begin the actual search, remember assisted living is not a nursing home or memory care. To determine the best community for them, start by addressing their ADLs’ (activities of daily living) needs. Keep in mind the amount of help they need right now and how much help they will most likely need over the next couple of years. After all you do not want to go through the process of moving them into a community to have to move them out in a few years once their needs cannot be met.

Determine your parents’ budget, and if you need help in that area, seek advice from an elder care financial service or attorney. At the MorningStar at River Oaks assisted living and memory care community, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services to present different financial resources commonly used to pay for senior living.

Another important step is to virtually (or personally) visit the place and to get to know the staff. As the newest assisted living in Houston, MorningStar at River Oaks provides residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security. In addition to assisted living and memory care, we offer respite care and short-term stays (from one week up to a full month) that are ideal to try us out for size. Please visit our website and ask about our Founders Club Benefits valued at $10,000.

Clutter May Increase Your Anxiety & Stress

October 13, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities

Known as the “Minimalists,” Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn spend their time helping people to learn to live with less. They say a typical house contains as many as 300,000 items; and their advice is to rid yourself of items that do not add value to your life. While obviously easier said than done, if you are an older adult who is trying to downsize for a move to senior housing, the following tips may help.

One suggestion is to start by decluttering; not only does it give you more space in your new home but living around clutter has been linked to anxiety and stress. When you throw away or donate stuff cluttering up your home, it gives room for the things you really like. Less stuff lightens your load and helps you get into the habit of buying things you don’t need. Not only does this mindset save money, but Fields Millburn explains, "Understanding the why behind simplifying gives us the leverage we need to begin to let go and helps us understand what is excess.”

The Minimalists recommend letting go of items you are hanging on to under the “just in case” category. Remember most things can be easily replaced if needed and in the meantime your load will be that much lighter.

Other suggestions include getting rid of blurry or duplicate photos, junk mail, documents and paperwork no longer needed, and old magazines and newspapers. If you want to further reduce your physical load, scan photos as well as paperwork you wish to save. Throw away broken or damaged items, or missing parts. If you have two hair dryers, chose one to keep and one to donate. Do the same with other duplicates. Get rid of books you will never read, clothes that don’t fit or are uncomfortable, and stuff you never use. Do the same with supplies and equipment from hobbies or sports you are no longer interested in; and if you are retired, downsize your professional wardrobe. Use this mindset when going through the rest of your household items.

We wish to introduce you to the newest senior living in Houston, the contemporary MorningStar at River Oaks. Located in the Upper Kirby District, we are close to upscale dining, shopping, entertainment and green spaces including River Oaks Park, Herman Park and Levy Park. While we specializes in providing assisted living, it is common for residents who require no assistance whatsoever to move as we offer a refreshing change of lifestyle with built-in companionship, 5-star dining, predictable budgeting, and activities and programming. Ask about our Founder’s Club Benefits Valued at $10,000.
