Pets Provide Seniors with Loyal Companionship and Unconditional Love

December 13, 2021 by MStar Living in Retirement communities

Over the last decade, there have been many studies done regarding the various benefits of pets for seniors including providing loyal companionship and unconditional love. They can help keep a senior active as even if you don’t want to go for a walk, you know your dog needs one. In fact, studies show seniors with dogs are more physically active than other older adults without pets. Another thing about taking a dog out for a walk is it is a great way to meet new friends.

However, before you rush out to get a dog or cat, veterinarians caution seniors (and their well-intentioned family members), to remember some animals are better suited to the energy level and temperament of older adults. They recommend several breeds of dogs that have a good disposition and are easy to care for. One breed making the list is the French bulldog as they are known as reliable companions and good walking partners. Poodles and Schipperke are both loyal and intelligent and also easy to care for. Veterinarians say a Maltese has a reputation for being an attentive dog to its owner. For a more active senior, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi makes a loving partner.

Experts say there are some breeds of cats that typically make better companions for seniors. The Birman cat is one. It is moderately active, affectionate, gentle, and a faithful companion known for its quiet air of dignity. Russian blue cats also make the list as they are quiet, gentle, genteel cats and make very loyal companions. Persian cats are known as very affectionate. The Ragdoll cat is another good choice as it is known for its docile, placid temperament and affectionate nature.

At MorningStar of Hillsboro, we recognize the importance of pets to their owners, which is why our community is pet friendly. Scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2022, MorningStar of Hillsboro will have 141 apartments in a range of configurations and floorplans.  Residents will enjoy carefree retirement years as we handle the maintenance and provide onsite luxury amenities, hospitality services and a community of friends. Unique Gift Ideas Mom or Dad will Love

December 12, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior

While you want to show mom or dad your love through a thoughtful gift this holiday season, it can be tough to figure out one. If they live in senior living that provides for many of their needs or in an apartment without much extra space, they probably do not need anything that takes up major space or already has it.

This is where it helps to be creative, and remember gifts of your time often mean the most to an elderly person. However there are some good gift ideas you may not have thought about and would be appreciated by your loved one. One idea for a mom or dad who loves coffee but doesn’t want to brew a whole pot is a single-serve coffee maker. Add in a few boxes of single-serve cups to use with the maker including hot chocolate or flavored coffees in a selection they would enjoy.

If they haven’t gotten an Amazon Echo yet, it can make a great gift for someone with mobility challenges as it is voice-operated. Alexa can play music, answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, control compatible smart home devices, and more. To get them started, put together a cheat sheet of verbal commands they can use.

Other ideas include a heated massage pillow to relieve neck and back pain, a sleep sound machine to help with a good night’s sleep, or a light-therapy lamp to help with the dark days of winter. A gift basket filled with their favorite treats or products to pamper themselves with like fancy soaps, lotions and a couple of pairs of non-skid fuzzy socks are always appreciated. Another hit would be a recordable book from the grandkids.

If you are looking for the finest assisted living in the Houston area, consider the new MorningStar at River Oaks. Our all-inclusive senior living community offers a range of luxury amenities found in high-end resorts, while providing all of the warmth and welcoming comforts of home. Every private suite is smartly-designed to maximize space and include floorplans in one and two-bedroom configurations. All have high-end finishes, wall-to-wall carpeting, large windows, lighting, and safety features such as full, handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Help for Alleviating Swollen Ankles & Feet

December 11, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior, Independent Living

Many older adults have problems with their circulatory system. Since blood flows through the veins in our legs upward into our heart, the force of gravity can work against us making it harder to push the blood up. When seniors spend lots of time sitting or standing, it can make blood flow problems worse. In some individuals the problem can lead to edema, a buildup of fluid in the feet and lower legs causing puffy, swollen ankles and feet.

Experts explain while the condition is generally benign, it needs to be checked out by your healthcare provider as it can be a sign of something more serious. Dr. Elizabeth Ratchford, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Vascular Medicine and an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, says whole-body problems that can lead to leg swelling include heart failure, kidney failure and liver failure. Blood clots and heart conditions can also cause swollen, painful legs and require immediate medical attention.

Regardless of the reason, Dr. Ratchford says tips to relieve the swelling typically include compression, elevation, exercise, and weight loss. Elevating your feet on a pillow can help venous blood flow back to the heart as does wearing knee-hi compression socks when sitting or standing for long periods of time. If possible avoid standing for long periods and take frequent breaks when sitting.

Another tip experts say is to spend at least 30 minutes a day exercising as it helps calf muscles push blood upward. If you are overweight, losing weight will relieve some of the pressure on the leg veins. Also reducing salt in your diet can help.

The Importance of Advance Care Legal Documents

December 10, 2021 by MStar Living in Assisted Living

An advanced directive is a legal document giving you a voice involving medical decisions in the event you are incapacitated. Many people shy away from creating such documents as they fail to realize how important they are, and mistakenly worry they are signic

The Harvard Medical School reports on some of the myths people have regarding advance care directives. They say you need to realize more care is not always better but can prolong the dying process without respect for quality of life or comfort. Refusing life support does not mean you are committing suicide but rather allowing your medical problem to be the cause of your death. Moreover, refusing life-extending treatment does not mean you are refusing comfort measures for pain management and symptoms. Talk to your family and doctor about your medical preferences, and be sure each has a copy of your advance directive documents.

Help Elderly Parents Enjoy the Holidays

December 09, 2021 by MStar Living in Assisted Living, Healthy senior

After last year, most of us look forward to celebrating a more normal holiday season; and with vaccines, many of us will spend quality time with older family members. Experts say there are some things we can do to help them feel more connected to the festivities.

Start by including them in some of the holiday’s plans such as selecting special foods or choosing the linens to use as it will make them feel needed and get them excited about the events. Experts say if they have memory challenges, serving some of the dishes they have always loved will help bring back pleasant memories.

If time allows, help them get ready for the family gatherings by taking them to a salon, or if they live in an assisted living community with salon services, treat them to a day at their salon. Buy mom or dad a new holiday sweater and give it to them to wear to the festivities, or go over beforehand to help them get dressed in their finest.

Other tips to help mom or dad enjoy the holidays are to get out old photo albums and ask them for some old family stories. Be sure to include family traditions such as watching a favorite holiday movie or playing a particular game.

If your parents bring up unhappy memories, let them talk; and don’t make decisions for them. Experts say be on the lookout if mom or dad seem to be tiring and offer to let them lie down in a quiet bedroom for a while or ask if they are ready to go home.

The Five Important Components of Physical Fitness

December 05, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior, Independent Living

Medical experts explain physical fitness includes five important components that help determine our overall health. They are defined as cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility.

The Medical News Today describes cardiorespiratory endurance by how well our bodies “supply fuel during physical activity via the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems.” Exercises to improve cardio endurance are ones that elevate the heart rate for a sustained amount of time and include swimming, jogging, brisk walking, and cycling. Cardio exercises strengthen the heart muscle allowing it to pump more blood per heartbeat, which in turn, reduces the risk for heart attacks, stroke and type 2 diabetes. However, doctors say any new exercise should be started slowly, and to gradually build intensity.

To build muscle, you need to routinely do exercises that initially tire the muscle out as well as take in enough protein. As you train, your endurance will improve as the muscles begin working together to increase maximum strength. Experts say your body composition can change dramatically with physical exercise and a person with a high muscle ratio may weigh more than someone else of a similar height and size.

Flexibility is another important aspect of physical fitness. Staying flexible can help avoid injuries, improve balance and for seniors, lower their risk of a fall. There are several different types of stretching and if you are an older adult, talk to your doctor about the best type of stretches to do.

At the MorningStar of Hillsboro 55+ community, we offer residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and community. Tips to Protect Your Eyes

December 03, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior

As we age, we can encounter various medical problems with our eyes. The Lancet reports by 2050 an estimated 895 million people worldwide will develop vision impairments (a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years). Experts say over 90 percent of people 65 and older will have a cataract, and half of those between 75 and 85 years old will have some vision loss due to a cataract. An Australian study found that by 80 years old, one in eight people have glaucoma. The Lancet articles say that while this sounds alarming, many vision problems can be treated, and even prevented by following some simple, healthy habits.

Recommendations for eye care include wearing sunglasses whenever we are in the sun to protect our eyes from UV light, which is just as bad for our eyes as it is for our skin. Wear sunglasses rated as a 100 percent protection against UVA and UVB, or a 100 percent protection against UV 400.

Eating a nutrient-rich diet is another important step to healthy eyes. Foods good for eyesight include dark-green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and collard greens that contain lutein and zeaxanthin. Research suggests they can block high-energy blue light that attacks the retinal cells. Other foods good for eyes are carrots, squash and sweet potatoes as well as foods high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Experts say getting enough sleep each night and exercising helps our eyes stay strong. A study from the University of California Los Angeles suggests “brisk walking may also lower your risk of getting glaucoma, with the most active among us having a 73 percent lower risk than the least active.” Also get in the habit of cleaning your lids at the base of the lashes with a mild soap or a pre-packaged eye lid scrub; and if you need another reason to quit smoking, quit for the health of your eyesight. Lastly, get regular eye exams.

MorningStar at River Oaks’ assisted living and memory care provide Houston area seniors a stress-free lifestyle to safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. How Many Steps Per Day for Better Health?

December 01, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities, Assisted Living, Independent Living, Retirement Communities

We have all heard about the value of walking 10,000 steps a day but recent studies show it may not actually be the magic number. One study published by JAMA found walking 7,000 steps or more a day may decrease the risk for mortality and offer better overall health.

In the cohort study of 2110 adults with a mean follow-up of 10.8 years, participants who walked at least 7000 steps a day, compared with those taking fewer than 7000 steps, had a 50% to 70% lower risk of mortality. Researchers also noted, “There was no association of step intensity with mortality regardless of adjustment for step volume.”

A 2020 study found a decreased risk for mortality in participants who took 8,000 steps a day than those who only took 4,000 steps a day. In the same year, another study found more steps taken each day were linked to lower rates of diabetes. Researchers say the bottom line is evidence points to the importance of increased physical activity.

Before you begin walking, talk to your healthcare provider; and if you are just beginning to exercise, be sure to start slowly. Wear properly-fitted, supportive shoes, and if walking during the day, wear sunscreen, protective clothing and a hat. Experts say you may want to take a look at running shoes as they typically incorporate the latest developments in cushioning, motion control and support.

Why Heart Disease can be Overlooked in Women

November 30, 2021 by MStar Living in Assisted Living, Healthy senior, Independent Living

The online journal, Medical News Today’s reports women and girls across the world still face challenges and discrimination in medical settings both as patients and prospective medical workers. One example of an area in which women’s medical health is often overlooked and misdiagnosed is coronary heart disease (CHD) despite the fact that it is the leading cause of death for women.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute explains CHD occurs when the arteries delivering oxygenated blood into the heart (where it is pumped out to the other organs) are not able to “service” the heart effectively. Studies show women may also be more at risk for developing non-obstructive CHD, a condition that causes the arteries going into the heart to be abnormally squeezed by surrounding tissue.

CHD symptoms can vary between individuals as well as differ in men and women; and non-obstructive CHD can be symptom-less and go undetected for years. To complicate matters, research shows women’s symptoms are atypical and include things like “back pain, burning in the chest, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or fatigue — which makes the diagnosis more difficult.” Additionally studies show part of the problem is too often women wait to get medical attention. Sadly it is frequently after the disease has progressed, and the damage is harder to treat. Researchers also say most of the CHD studies done in the past have concentrated on men and have underrepresented women.  Hopefully in the future, more women will be included.

Screenings Help Seniors Stay Healthy

November 26, 2021 by MStar Living in Independent Living, Assisted Living, Healthy senior

As we age, it is important to stay up-to-date with our health care including routine screenings as many diseases do not show signs of symptoms until the problem is harder to treat. Screenings also allow your physician to compare today’s readings to past tests to look for concerning signs. However medical experts estimate over half of all adults over 65 are not currently with the recommended screenings.

In many cases our age determines the type of screenings we should get. Some tests are recommended once a year, while others, like a colonoscopy, may be based on past test results and/or on the advice of your doctor.

Common screenings include annual cholesterol tests to measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Cholesterol tests can help “determine your risk for the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).” Your blood pressure should be checked each time you visit a healthcare professional, and if readings are high, it should be monitored.

Mammograms are important screenings that help detect breast cancer. Current recommendations for women 40 years or older with an average risk of breast cancer is to have an annual mammograms. For others with a higher risk, consult with your doctor. Other types of screening for seniors include annual skin checks to look for signs of skin cancer and bone density tests to check for loss of tissue and bone, which might indicate early signs of osteoporosis. As we age, annual vision test screen for cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Hearing tests can help seniors get the help they need if there is a problem. Talk to your doctor about which ones they recommend you get.

When it comes to Blood Pressure – Lower is Better

November 19, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior, Independent Living

A lower blood pressure is healthier and may save your life. High blood pressure (HBP) can lead to heart disease and is linked to one of the leading causes of death in Americans. To understand blood pressure, experts explain the top number; Systolic Blood Pressure is a measurement of the force exerted by your heart each time it beats on the walls of your arteries. Your bottom number is Diastolic pressure, and measures the force exerted by your heart between beats on the walls of your arteries. Also you should know experts recently lowered the numbers for what is considered high blood pressure.

The Mayo Clinic states a normal blood pressure is <120 mm Hg over <80 mm Hg and an elevated BP is 120-129 mm Hg over <80 mm Hg. Doctors consider Stage 1 hypertension to be in the range of 130-139 mm Hg over 80-89 mm Hg and stage 2 hypertension over ≥140 mm Hg and ≥90 mm Hg. The mm Hg stands for millimeters of mercury.

HBP is called a silent killer as there are no symptoms, and the CDC estimates 1 of out 3 people with it don’t know they have it. In addition as we age, our risk increases so doctors say it is important to have your blood pressure routinely checked. Home monitors are good options for older adults who are trying to keep their blood pressure under control.

Healthcare professionals say it is important to talk to your physician about strategies to help lower your BP. They say even small changes like reducing your salt can result in a drop of five or six points; and just losing 2 lbs. can decrease your numbers by 1 point.

Using the Internet for Medical Advice?

Let’s be honest, many of us rely on the Internet for medical advice. While it can supply good answers, doctors also caution you have to be careful with whom you trust. Like all things there are good and bad informational sites on the Internet, especially medical one.

Dr. Michael Langan, an internal medicine physician at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, cautions anyone with a blog can dispense information and advice; and a good way to avoid misinformation is to ask your doctor to recommend the sites they trust. Additionally the National Institute on Aging recommends using health websites sponsored by Federal Government agencies. They say a good place for reliable, up-to-date information is the National Institutes of Health, but at the same time, remind everyone that the Internet is no substitute for seeing your doctor or other health professional who can give you advice that caters to your specific situation.

Other things to look for include name recognition such as the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. Moreover remember sites that end in .gov, identity U.S. government agencies; .edu, educational institutions; and .org, usually designates nonprofit organizations (such as professional groups; scientific, medical, or research societies; advocacy groups). A .com is a commercial site.

The NIH says to look for the date of the information (often can be found at the bottom of the page) and see if the authors and contributors are identified. If the author is listed, what is his/her background and what is their goal in writing the article or the intent of the organization it is written for. Is there any financial motive for the information? Check out the About Us or Contact Us pages as they provide background information about the organization.

Shift Your Attention Outward with an Awe Walk

December 12, 2021 by MStar Living in assisted living

A couple of decades ago, psychologists started studying the science of “Awe,” defined as an overwhelming, self-transcendent sense of wonder and reverence that allows a person to feel part of something bigger. A sense of awe can be inspired by nature, music, art, political events and other activities that provide a person with feelings of joy, wellbeing and calm.

One way to experience this type of wonder and calm is to take an “Awe walk,” where you intentionally shift your attention outward rather than inward. The journal Emotion published a study in September 2020, which showed taking awe walks can reduce stress and boost mental health. During weekly 15-minute walks, half of the 60 and older group was instructed to try and experience the emotion of awe as they walked. The other half just walked their 15 minutes without any further instructions.

Participants took photographs of themselves during their walks and afterward filled out brief surveys describing the emotions they felt including an assessment of their sense of awe. The group was encouraged to feel awe detailed “significant boosts of positive prosocial emotions such as compassion and gratitude over the course of the study.”

Experts say it is easier to experience the emotion of an awe walk if you do it in a place with new sights and sounds such as taking a hike on a nature trail or looking at a panoramic view from a skyscraper. Remember to turn off your cell phone and approach the walk with fresh eyes. Recommendations include taking a few relaxing deep breaths before you start, be aware of your feet on the ground and listen to the sounds around you. While you walk, every once in a while, focus on something around you that really inspires you, i.e. the color of sky, a mountain in the distance, the sparkle of the water on a lake, etc.

The MorningStar of Pasadena 55+ senior living community provides a relaxing, carefree lifestyle for our residents. We proudly offer independent living and assisted living within a warm, loving environment filled with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities. Refreshed & renewed, we invite you to visit our website to learn more about the finest senior living Pasadena, CA offers.

Studies Show Yoga is Good for Our Brain

November 12, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities, Independent Living

While practitioners have known for centuries the calmness and peace yoga brings into their lives, science has finally caught up with real evidence of its benefits to our brains. Studies show yoga elevates levels of the brain chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid (GAGA), which helps regulate nerve activity and is associated with better mood and decreased anxiety.

The Harvard Medical School journal writes, “Yoga strengthens parts of the brain that play a key role in memory, attention, awareness, thought, and language. Think of it as weightlifting for the brain.” Their evidence comes from several studies that used MRI and other brain imaging technology. Researchers found participants who practiced yoga regularly had a thicker cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, than participants who did not practice yoga.

This could be significant because as people age, this is one of the areas in the brain that typically shrinks. As the older yoga practitioners had less shrinkage than non-practitioners, researchers say it suggests yoga can “counteract age-related declines in memory and other cognitive skills.”

Other benefits of yoga include helping individuals lose weight, sleep better, lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels to improve diabetes. It also helps people gain flexibility and muscle strength around arthritic joints and reduces the pain associated with the condition.

We All have Time for a Little “Mindfulness”

November 11, 2021 by MStar Living in Healthy senior, Independent Living

Many of us feel like our lives are busy and each day filled with a list of responsibilities and tasks. While this may be true, experts stress the importance of taking a few minutes out of our day to practice mindfulness. They say the point is to make time to be in the present each day in order to reconnect with ourselves and feel a sense of calmness. In other words, notice the brightness of the flowers, the songs of the birds, the clouds in the sky, etc., and who among us doesn’t need that?

Science is now exploring mindfulness and how it can affect our overall state of happiness and reduce stress, anxiety, and negative behaviors. Research suggests the practice can also improve physical health by lowering blood pressure, treating heart disease and improving sleep as well as reducing chronic pain. Moreover along with a relaxed state of mind, studies show the practice of mindfulness can improve a person’s concentration and memory skills.

Kabat-Zinn, founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, was one of the first to bring the practice of mindfulness meditation into mainstream medicine. His research demonstrated how the practice of mindfulness “can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health, attitudes, and behaviors.”

To practice mindfulness, which is a form of mediation, there are several methods you can use to get started but experts say the most important thing is to keep trying. Suggestions include joining a group, listening to calming music or finding a quiet spot to sit. However, whatever your method, the goal is to find a sense of focused relaxation, concentrating on the present, and reflecting on emotions and thoughts without judgement.

With the opening of the MorningStar at River Oaks community, senior living in Houston just got a whole lot better. Our beautiful, warm and welcoming senior living community offers residents all the services they need to live life to the fullest. In addition to assisted living, our community offers individualized memory care, respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (from a week to a full month) to see if we are a good fit.

Take a Holistic Approach to Physical Fitness

November 10, 2021 by MStar Living in Senior Living Communities, Healthy senior

However doctors say any new exercise should be started slowly, and to gradually build intensity.*

*Before beginning any new type of exercise, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider.

At the MorningStar of Kirkland 55+ community, we offer residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and community. We are scheduled to open at the end of 2021, and along with contemporary-style apartments, residents will enjoy a full range of luxury amenities and hospitality services.
